KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Leaving a wavy contrail in its wake, the launch of space shuttle Atlantis is viewed through the windows of the Launch Control Center, where VIPS gathered to watch, including Center Director Bill Parsons, Associate Administrator for NASA Space Operations William H. Gerstenmaier and NASA Administrator Mike Griffin. Liftoff was on time at 2:45 p.m. EST from Launch Pad 39A. The launch is the third attempt for Atlantis since December 2007 to carry the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory to the International Space Station.
