The Space Shuttle orbiter Columbia sits outside the Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1 after transfer from the Vehicle Assembly Building. Columbia will undergo processing for mission STS-93, targeted for launch in July 1999. The STS-93 mission will deploy the Chandra X-ray Observatory (formerly AXAF) which comprises three major elements: the spacecraft, the telescope, and the science instrument module (SIM). Chandra will allow scientists from around the world to obtain unprecedented X-ray images of a variety of high-energy objects to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe.
