They are astronaut Eugene A. Cernan (on left), commander; and scientist-astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt, lunar module pilot. Astronaut Ronald E. Evans, command module pilot, remained with the Apollo 17 Command and Service Modules in lunar orbit.
