
The NASA Glenn's Propulsion System Lab (PSL) recently remodeled control room. This is where jet and rocket engines are tested at GRC. This remodeled control room offers better test monitoring and work stations for test engineers and technicians.

Parametric Inlet Model in 10x10 Wind Tunnel

The NASA Fundamental Aeronautics Hypersonic Project is focused on technologies for combined cycle, air-breathing propulsions systems to enable reusable launch systems for access to space. Turbine Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) propulsion systems offer specific impulse improvements over rocket-based propulsion systems in the subsonic takeoff and return mission segments and offer improved safety. The potential to realize more aircraft-like operations with expanded launch site capability and reduced system maintenance are additional benefits.

The Sierra Space Plane, Dream Chaser, suspended by a crane sits just inside the overhead door of the ISP (In Space Propulsion) test facility at NASA GRC-ATF. Once lifted and lowered into the test chamber, it will be exposed to the harsh cold conditions of space for testing in extended periods of time.

Emily Timko, featured in a Faces of NASA article, poses in the IRT (Icing Research Tunnel) where she works as a “cloud engineer”. She is a Mechanical Test Engineer and works to create unique water spray conditions that simulate icing clouds in the natural aircraft flight environment. Shown in the photo is a portion of the fan drive motor and fan blades that together drive the air through the wind tunnel.

While photographing the Supermoon on September 17, 2024 for a NASA GRC Aerospace Frontiers article on the 2024 Supermoon, a plane departing Cleveland Hopkins Airport flew right through the middle of the moon. The photographer used a portion of the rocket garden’s Ares 1 rocket and a corner of the NASA GRC hangar building to frame the photograph of the moon. When the plane was seen approaching, the photographer used continuous shutter speed in hopes of capturing the plane and the moon together

The Lockheed Viking S-3B aircraft was parked for re-fulling out near the hangar at Glenn Research Center in preparation for its departure and retirement from service. This former NAVY aircraft was the last such aircraft still flying. It has gone to a museum on the west coast. After leaving service with the NAVY, it came to GRC to be used in aircraft icing experiments. Tree branches frame the tail of this old war bird in front of the glass windows of the hangar door.

NASA Moon Kit of things I would take to the moon, The first thing I thought of for my Moon Kit was the first book I ever read when I was learning to read. It is titled, You Will Go To The Moon. I really liked that book and read it many times, looking at the illustrations and wondering about if I would ever actually go to the moon. Of the many belongings that I have lost through the years from moving, etc. that book has stayed with me and so it would of course go to the moon with me. Photography has always interested me and so a family photo was second to get packed. We always had photos taken and volumes of old family photos in the house and so photography has played an important role in my life and so my camera gear is third to get packed. As a kid I spend a lot of time and money building rockets and flying them. I bet my rocket would go very high on the moon. I also like a little candy wherever I go.

The test chamber is 38 ft in diameter by 62 ft deep amd made of stainless steel. It is vacuum rated at 10-7 torr long duration (Local atmospheric pressure to 100 statute miles altitude). The vacuum chamber surfaces are lined with a liquid nitrogen cold wall, capable of maintaining -320 °F. Local area girl scouts competed in a "Girl Scouts to the Moon and Back" essay contest. The essay contest gave the girls scouts a chance to win a Space Science badge that has actually been to space on NASA's Artemis I mission. After the award ceremony the girl scouts got to tour some of the NASA Glenn facilities. Picture is the "cave" at the Graphics and Visualization Lab, also known as the GRUVE Lab. Looking on is Richard Rinehart who is an engineer who works in the GRUVE LAB and creates 3D simulated experiences that demonstrate NASA's technology.

Space Power Facility at Plum Brook Station, RUAG Ariane 5 Shroud Separation Tests. GRC has the world's largest vacuum chamber in the world. This world class facility is host to many space launch vehicle systems tests from customer's in this country and from around the world. Shown here is the post test of a successful rocket shroud separation test. The shroud, or top of a rocket, is jettisoned into two halves with explosive charges to allow the payload to be exposed for deployment. The payload, often time is a satellite, would be sitting atop the center white section shown in the middle of the photo. This photo was taken from on top of the rocket holding the payload and both halves of the rocket shroud looking down at one of the shroud halves and the test crew at the bottom.
