Haise, wearing an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), is holding a Solar Wind Composition (SWC) experiment.

AS16-117-18826 (23 April 1972) --- Astronaut John W. Young collects samples at the North Ray Crater geological site during the mission's third and final Apollo 16 extravehicular activity (EVA). He has a rake in his hand, and the gnomon is near his foot. Note how soiled Young's Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) is. While astronauts Young, commander; and Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot; descended in the Apollo 16 Lunar Module (LM) "Orion" to explore the Descartes highlands landing site on the moon, astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) "Casper" in lunar orbit.

They are deploying components of the Apollo lunar surface experiments package (ALSEP). Standing in the center next to the ALSEP central station is astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr. (wearing red stripe on space suit), commander. Astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, lunar module pilot, is in the left foreground. Both crew men are wearing the Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMU).

The SWC is a component of the Early Apollo Scientific Experiment Package (EASEP). Aldrin is the lunar module pilot of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission.

S69-25878 (23 Feb. 1969) --- Astronaut Russell L. Schweickart, lunar module pilot of the Apollo 9 prime crew, wears the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) which he will use during his scheduled Apollo 9 extravehicular activity. In addition to the space suit and bubble helmet, the EMU also includes a Portable Life Support System back pack, an Oxygen Purge System (seen atop the PLSS), and a Remote Control Unit on his chest. This equipment will be completely independent of the spacecraft during Schweickart's EVA. He will be secured only by a tether line. When this photograph was taken, Schweickart was suited to participate in an Apollo 9 Countdown Demonstration Test.
