The 11-day, 21-hour, 12-minute STS-105 mission accomplished the goals set for the 11th flight to the International Space Station: swap out of the resident station crew; delivery of equipment, supplies and scientific experiments; and installation of the Early Ammonia Servicer and heater cables for the S0 truss on the Station. Discovery traveled 4.3 million miles on its 30th flight into space, the 106th mission of the Space Shuttle program. The landing was the first of five in 2001 to occur in daylight at KSC. Onboard at landing were STS-105 astronauts Scott J. Horowitz, commander; Frederic W. (Rick) Sturckow, pilot; and Patrick G. Forrester and Daniel T. Barry, both mission specialists; along with the returning Expedition Two crewmembers--cosmonaut Yury V. Usachev, commander; and James S. Voss and Susan J. Helms, both flight engineers.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- On KSC’s Shuttle Landing Facility runway 15 following mission STS-105, specially designed vehicles and a team of up to 150 trained personnel gather around Discovery for safing operations, checking for toxic or hazardous gases, and introducing purge air to cool the vehicle and humidified air conditioning to the payload bay and other cavities to remove any residual explosive or toxic fumes that may be present. Some personnel will assist the STS-105 and Expedition Two crews in disembarking from the orbiter via the Crew Transfer Vehicle (at right). KSC support personnel will prepare the orbiter for ground tow operations, installing switch guards and removing data packages from any onboard experiments. Main gear touchdown was at 2:22:58 p.m. EDT; wheel stop, at 2:24:06 p.m. EDT. "As a kid, I was really mystified and obsessed with space and flying. So I used to watch any video, any show, anything I could about flying, launching to space, floating in space… everything. There was definitely something magical about seeing astronauts on spacewalks and working in the back of the shuttle. All those IMAX movies, I couldn’t get enough of them. But you know what’s funny about it? My whole life I knew I wanted to go to space, but it pales in comparison to how badly I want to go back having been there. It’s even worse now. The FOMO is so bad. "That was the first thing I said to my doctors when I landed. She asked, 'How are you feeling?' And I said, 'I want to get back in the line and go up again.' "People look at the International Space Station and think, this is a marvel of what humans can achieve. Which is true, but also I look at it like… that’s the place I used to live.
