STS035-49-029 (2-10 Dec 1990) --- Posing on the middeck of Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, are Mission Specialist (MS) Jeffrey A. Hoffman (mustache) and MS Robert A. R. Parker. Determining who is right side up is complicated by the microgravity of space. Hoffman's head is at the middeck floor and his feet are at the ceiling. Their particular mission here is to replace failed Rate Sensor Units (RSU) inside the telescope's housing.  Hoffman is anchored to a foot restraint, mounted on the end of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, while Musgrave is standing on a foot restraint attached to a support structure in the cargo bay.

Musgrave works at the Solar Array Carrier (SAC) in the Space Shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay.  Hoffman, anchored to a foot restraint mounted on the end of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, waits to be maneuvered to the forward payload bay.  The original solar array panels are partially visible at top, while their replacements remain stowed in foreground.  The crew's second pair of space walkers -- astronauts Kathryn C. Thornton and Thomas D. Akers -- later changed the solar arrays on the mission's second EVA.

Hoffman (frame center) remains secured by his feet on the end of Endeavour's robot arm as he prepares to participate in the replacement of Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC).  Astronaut F. Story Musgrave (just in frame at lower left corner) assists Hoffman in removing the new camera (WFPC-II) from the Scientific Instrument Protective Enclosure (SIPE).  Electronic still photography is a relatively new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality.  The electronic still camera has flown as an experiment on several other shuttle missions.

STS035-12-015 (2-11 Dec 1990) --- Astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman, STS 35 mission specialist, uses a manual pointing controller (MPC) for the Astro-1 mission's Instrument Pointing System (IPS).   By using the MPC,  Hoffman and other crewmembers on Columbia's aft flight deck,  were able to command the IPS, located in the cargo bay, to record astronomical data.  Hoffman is serving the "Blue" shift which complemented the currently sleeping "Red" shift of crewmembers as the mission collected scientific data on a 24-hour basis.  The scene was photographed with a 35mm camera.

STS035-10-015 (2-10 Dec 1990) --- This busy scene shows cameras and supportive photographic gear temporarily stowed on Space Shuttle Columbia's aft flight deck. It was photographed with a 35mm camera by astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman, mission specialist, who called the cluster a "camera forest." The seven STS-35 crewmembers trained to record a wide variety of imagery with an equally broad range of equipment. In addition to cameras, a spot meter, film, a pair of binoculars, a bracket, lenses, lens cleaner and other photographic equipment are in the scene. Clouds over ocean waters are framed by an aft flight deck window at upper right.

Story Musgrave are partially silhouetted against the Indian Ocean as they work to install the Magnetic Sensing System (MSS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).  Musgrave is anchored to the end of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm.  The HST is positioned along the southern end of Madagascar, 325 nautical miles away.  Visible on the western coast are the sediment laden Onilahy and Fiherenana Rivers which empty into Saint Augustin Bay.  North of Fiherenana River is the Mangoky River.  The circular feature on the southern end of Madagascar and to the right of HST is the L'ivakoany Mountains.  The eastern coast is relatively straight compared to the western coast.

Story Musgrave uses one of the handrails on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during the second of his three sessions of STS-61 extravehicular activity (EVA-3).  Astronauts Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman used this particular EVA to change out the Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) and two magnetometers (also known as magnetic sensing systems).  The photo was recorded with the Electronic Still Camera (ESC) inside Endeavour's cabin.  Electronic still photography is a relatively new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality.  The electronic still camera has flown as an experiment on several other shuttle missions.

S97-00588 (8 Jan 1997) --- In the new Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) at the Sonny Carter Training Center Facility, astronaut Mark C. Lee (obscured by bubbles at center) and an instructor practice procedures to be used during four scheduled space walks to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).  At present, four sessions of Extravehicular Activity (EVA), are planned, using two pairs of astronauts on alternating days.  Lee, payload commander, will work with Steven L. Smith, while Gregory J. Harbaugh will team with Joseph R. Tanner.  Astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman (wearing space suit, center frame) who performed three EVA?s on the initial HST-servicing mission, helped to train the astronauts.

Nordsieck, Dr. Samual T. Durrance, and Dr. Ronald A. Parise. The crew of 8 launched aboard the Space Shuttle Orbiter Columbia on  December 2, 1990 at 1:19:01am (EST). The primary objective of the mission was round the clock observation of the celestial sphere in ultrviolet and X-Ray astronomy with the Astro-1 observatory which consisted of four telescopes: the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT); the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE); the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT); and the Broad Band X-Ray Telescope (BBXRT). Due to loss of data used for pointing and operating the ultraviolet telescopes, Marshall Space Flight Center ground teams were forced to aim the telescopes with fine tuning by the flight crew.

STS061-S-002 (1 Oct. 1993) --- These seven NASA astronauts are currently in training for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) servicing mission, scheduled for later this year. Astronaut Richard O. The five mission specialists for the mission are (left to right, seated) astronauts Kathryn C. Thornton and F. S93-33104 (7 Apr 1993) --- Wearing a training version of Space Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman uses the giant pool of the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F) to rehearse for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) repair mission.  Out of frame is astronaut F. Story Musgrave, who will join Hoffman in STS-61 EVA.  The hand at top frame belongs to a SCUBA-equipped diver.  A number of divers are on hand for all training sessions in the WET-F.  A total of five extravehicular activity (EVA) sessions will be conducted during the scheduled December mission of the Endeavour.

STS046-33-028 (4 Aug. 1992) --- With the possibility of an extravehicular activity (EVA) being added to the agenda, the two EVA-trained crew members begin their "pre-breathe" period on the space shuttle Atlantis' flight deck. Astronauts Jeffrey A. Hoffman (left), payload commander, and Franklin R. Chang-Diaz, mission specialist, reported to this station and began the "pre-breathe" process when problems developed during the extension of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). When the human body is exposed to a sudden decrease in atmospheric pressure (for instance, from the 10.2 ppsi in the crew cabin to the 4.5 ppsi of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit), nitrogen traces in the bloodstream will expand. This expansion can create tiny bubbles and potential for the "bends". In order to lessen the effect, an astronaut must "pre-breathe" pure oxygen (the same pure oxygen that he will breathe in the suit) to help "purge" nitrogen from his/her bloodstream before exerting him/herself in the low-pressure environment of the suit. The "pre-breathe" exercise and the EVA turned out to be not needed as the TSS operations were resumed by remote operations.
