STS037-45-012 (10 April 1991) --- Astronauts Linda M. Godwin and Jerome (Jay) Apt sort out the special partial-pressure garments for landing (and ascent) as the end of their mission in space approaches. The suits are stored on the Space Shuttle Atlantis' mid-deck. The scene was photographed with a 35mm camera. This was one of the visuals used by the crew members during their April 19 Post Flight Press Conference (PFPC) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC).

This rehearsal, held in the Crew Compartment Trainer (CCT) of the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Shuttle Mockup and Integration Laboratory, was followed by a training session on emergency egress procedures. Clervoy, a European astronaut, will join five NASA astronauts for a week and a half aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis in Earth-orbit in support of the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS-3).

STS066-S-003 (3 November 1994) --- In the white room at Launch Pad 39B, Jean-Francois Clervoy, mission specialist representing European Space Agency (ESA), is assisted with his partial pressure launch/entry suit (LES) by close-out crew members Travis Thompson and Danny Wyatt (background). At noon on November 3, 1994, the ESA astronaut joined five NASA astronauts for launch aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis. STS026-05-022 (5 Oct 1988) --- Astronaut Frederick H. (Rick) Hauck, commander, rehearses the donning of the new orange partial pressure suit which he and the other four crewmembers will put on just prior to the entry phase of the flight. The suit made its debut for the launch phase three days earlier; however the crew had the advantage of a one-G environment for the chore on that occasion.

STS047-28-002 (20 Sept. 1992) --- Astronaut Curtis L. Brown, Jr., STS-47 pilot, is photographed at the Space Shuttle Endeavour's pilot station about ten minutes after main engine cutoff on launch day of the eight-day Spacelab-J mission. Wearing the partial-pressure launch and entry suit, Brown shared the forward cabin with astronaut Robert L. Gibson (out of frame at left), mission commander. Endeavour was beginning its second mission in space, this one devoted to research supporting the Spacelab-J mission.

The two, along with four other NASA astronauts and a Japanese payload specialist, had just broken a Shuttle duration record as they ran almost 18 hours over two weeks in space in support of the International Microgravity Laboratory 2 (IML-2) mission. STS028-S-001 (8 Aug 1989) --- The five astronaut crewmembers for STS-28 leave the operations and checkout building to board a transfer van en route to Launch Complex 39 for a date with Columbia. Front to back are Brewster H. Shaw Jr., Richard N. Richards, David C. Leestma, James C. Adamson and Mark N. Brown. At the rear of the line are Astronaut Michael L. Coats, acting chief of the astronaut office; and Donald R. Puddy, director of flight crew operations at JSC. Coats later flew a NASA Shuttle training aircraft for pre-launch and launch monitoring activities.

STS037-13-036 (5-11 April 1991) --- Astronaut Steven R. Nagel talks to ground controllers from the commander's station on the space shuttle Atlantis. He is wearing the special partial pressure suit used by space shuttle crew members for ascent and entry phases. Nagel, mission commander, and four other astronauts spent six days in space during which they readied the Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) for deployment, released it into space, tested possible Space Station Freedom translation aid devices, conducted experiments, took photographs and performed other duties. NM22-416-017 (20 Sept. 1996) --- One of the first priorities of astronaut John E. Blaha, mission specialist for STS-79 and soon to be cosmonaut guest researcher for Mir-22, was to get his Sokol space suit pressure-checked for the move aboard Russia’s Mir Space Station. On flight day four, Blaha and his STS-79 crew mates aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with Mir. Here, seen soon after hatch opening, Blaha prepares for the needed suit tests.

S96-18553 (30 Oct. 1996) --- Astronaut Scott J. Horowitz, pilot, gets help with his launch and entry suit prior to a training session in JSC's systems integration facility. Wearing training versions of the partial pressure launch and entry escape suit, Horowitz and his crewmates went on to simulate an emergency ejection, using the escape pole system on the mid deck, as well as other phases of their scheduled February mission.

STS088-313-030 (4-15 December 1998) --- Astronaut James H. Newman assists astronaut Nancy J. Currie, both mission specialists, with her launch and entry suit (LES) on the middeck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Endeavour. The burnt-orange colored suits are high altitude, partial-pressure garments worn by each crew member for ascent and entry phases of the shuttle flights.

STS085-364-008 (19 August 1997) --- One of the final pictures taken during the STS-85 mission was this frame, exposed on the mid-deck during preparations for the August 19, 1997 entry. Left to right are payload specialist Bjarni V. Tryggvason, with astronauts Kent V. Rominger, pilot, and N. Jan Davis, payload commander. Rominger has already donned his partial pressure launch and entry suit, while Tryggvason and Davis have put on their blue under garments but have yet to don their escape suits.
