Newman and Carl E. Walz, along with a number of payloads. Painted markings on the service structure of Site 1 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome seen on Friday, July 19, 2019, show the milestones accomplised by launches from the historic pad. The markings commemorate the first launch from the pad on May 15, 1957, the launch of Sputnik 1 on October 4, 1957, the launch of the first human to orbit Earth, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961, and the fact that the pad has been the site of over 500 launches of various rockets since its construction. Expedition 60 Soyuz Commander Alexander Skvortsov of Roscosmos, flight engineer Andrew Morgan of NASA, and flight engineer Luca Parmitano of ESA (European Space Agency) launched from the historic pad to begin their mission to the International Space Station at 12:28 p.m. Eastern time (9:28 p.m. Baikonur time) on July 20th. Inside the dome building at Playalinda Beach, Bob Fore points to a map of camera sites during a presentation to the media on the improved tracking cameras and long-range optical tracking systems that will be used to capture ascent imagery during the return to flight of the Space Shuttle. The press opportunity also includes tours of the launch pad perimeter camera site at Launch Complex 39B and the other optical tracking site at the Merritt Island National Refuge.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The slings from a large crane are in place on the orbiter access arm, which ends in the White Room, that is part of the fixed service structure, or FSS,  on Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.  The White Room provided entry into space shuttles that were on the pad. The arm is being removed from the FSS for the pad's conversion as launch site for the Constellation Program's Ares I-X.
