This is a Space Shuttle mission STS-61 onboard view showing astronauts Story Musgrave and Jeffrey Hoffman preforming repairs to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during their Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA). Astronauts' work was made easier by the HST's many crew aids. Astronaut Musgrave makes use of one of the spacecraft's handholds. Launched on December 1, 1993, the Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavor STS-061 mission was the 59th Shuttle flight.

STS061-87-046 (5 Dec 1993) --- Astronauts Jeffrey A. Hoffman (right) and F. Story Musgrave work near the base of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on the first of five spacewalks.  Their particular mission here is to replace failed Rate Sensor Units (RSU) inside the telescope's housing.  Hoffman is anchored to a foot restraint, mounted on the end of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, while Musgrave is standing on a foot restraint attached to a support structure in the cargo bay.

STS006-45-124 (7 April 1983) --- Astronaut F. Story Musgrave, STS-6 mission specialist, translates down the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Challenger’s payload bay door hinge line with a bag of latch tools. This photograph is among the first five still frames that recorded the April 7 extravehicular activity (EVA) of Dr. Musgrave and Donald H. Peterson, the flight’s other mission specialist. It was photographed with a handheld 70mm camera from inside the cabin by one of two crew members who remained on the flight deck during the EVA. Dr. Musgrave’s task here was to evaluate the techniques required to move along the payload bay’s edge with tools. In the lower left foreground are three canisters containing three getaway special (GAS) experiments. Part of the starboard wind and orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pod are seen back dropped against the blackness of space. The gold-foil protected object partially out of frame on the right is the airborne support equipment for the now vacated inertial upper stage (IUS) which aided the deployment of the tracking and data relay satellite on the flight’s first day. S93-34001 (26 May 1993) --- Astronaut F. Story Musgrave, wearing a training version of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), participates in a dry run for tests in a thermal vacuum chamber.  The payload commander will be among four suited crew members participating in task rehearsals and testing the tools that will be used on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) repair mission.  The test, conducted in Chamber B of the Space Environment and Simulation Laboratory (SESL) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), verified that the tools being designed for the mission will work in the cold vacuum of space. Experiments to seek solutions for a range of biomedical issues are at the heart of several investigations that will be hosted by the Commercial Instrumentation Technology Associates (ITA), Inc. The biomedical experiments CIBX-2 payload is unique, encompassing more than 20 separate experiments including cancer research, commercial experiments, and student hands-on experiments from 10 schools as part of ITA's ongoing University Among the stars program. Here, Astronaut Story Musgrave activates the CMIX-5 (Commercial MDA ITA experiment) payload in the Space Shuttle mid deck during the STS-80 mission in 1996 which is similar to CIBX-2. The experiments are sponsored by NASA's Space Product Development Program (SPD).

Story Musgrave are partially silhouetted against the Indian Ocean as they work to install the Magnetic Sensing System (MSS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).  Musgrave is anchored to the end of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm.  The HST is positioned along the southern end of Madagascar, 325 nautical miles away.  Visible on the western coast are the sediment laden Onilahy and Fiherenana Rivers which empty into Saint Augustin Bay.  North of Fiherenana River is the Mangoky River.  The circular feature on the southern end of Madagascar and to the right of HST is the L'ivakoany Mountains.  The eastern coast is relatively straight compared to the western coast.

Story Musgrave’s helmet visor encompasses all the action in the frame. Dr. Musgrave and astronaut Donald H. Peterson (reflected on right side of the visor) were fully suited in their Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits and were participating in EVA preparation exercises. Astronaut Karol J. S92-35764 (12 May 1992) --- Wearing extravehicular mobility units (EMU's) and fitted with weights for neutral buoyancy are three trouble-shooting astronauts.  The astronauts practiced techniques for capturing Intelsat, and climbing into the airlock mockup in the Weightless Environment Training Facility (WETF).  No apparent problems were identified in placing three astronauts in the airlock at one time.  Left to right are, Michael R. (Rich) Clifford, Story Musgrave, and James S. Voss.  Three Endeavour astronauts, Pierre J. Thuot, Richard J. Hieb and Thomas D. Akers, will attempt to capture Intelsat again on May 13.  Clifford played the role of Hieb, Musgrave for Thuot, and Voss, Akers.

History of Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
While instruments on the pallets in the payload bay observed the universe, biological experiments were performed in the middeck of the Shuttle Orbiter Challenger. Studying life processes in a microgravity environment can shed new light on the functioning of biological systems on Earth. These investigations can also help us understand how living organisms react to prolonged weightlessness. One such experiment was the vitamin D metabolites and bone demineralization experiment. This investigation measured the vitamin D metabolite levels of crew members to gain information on the cause of bone demineralization and mineral imbalance that occur during prolonged spaceflight as well as on Earth. Research into the biochemical nature of vitamin D has shown that the D-metabolites play a major role in regulating the body's calcium and phosphorus levels. One major function of the most biologically active vitamin D metabolite is to regulate the amount of calcium absorbed from the diet and taken out of bones. This investigation had two phases. The first was the developmental phase, which included extensive testing before flight, and the second, or final phase, involved the postflight analysis of the crew's blood samples. STS080-375-023 (19 Nov.-7 Dec. 1996) --- Astronauts Kenneth D. Cockrell, STS-80 mission commander, and Tamara E. Jernigan, payload commander, share a moment of off-duty time with astronaut Story Musgrave on the middeck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia.  Musgrave was making his sixth flight aboard the Space Shuttle as a mission specialist.  His fellow crewmembers presented him with a patch that reads, "Master of Space."  Before and during his 30 years with NASA, Musgrave obtained several academic degrees, including several Masters, a medical doctorate and several Ph.D.

STS080-312-004 (19 Nov.-7 Dec. 1996) --- Astronaut Kenneth D. Cockrell, STS-80 mission commander, washes his hair on the middeck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia. Displaying a sense of humor, the commander asked astronaut Story Musgrave, who is bald, to address this visual during a briefing with Johnson Space Center (JSC) employees on Jan. 14, 1997. Equal to the task, Musgrave cracked a number of bald jokes and remarked that it was much easier to polish a head in zero gravity than to wash one.

S61-E-017 (6 Dec 1993) --- Astronaut F. Story Musgrave uses one of the handrails on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during the second of his three sessions of STS-61 extravehicular activity (EVA-3).  Astronauts Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman used this particular EVA to change out the Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) and two magnetometers (also known as magnetic sensing systems).  The photo was recorded with the Electronic Still Camera (ESC) inside Endeavour's cabin.  Electronic still photography is a relatively new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality.  The electronic still camera has flown as an experiment on several other shuttle missions.

STS080-375-029 (6 Dec. 1996) --- On the middeck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia, astronaut Story Musgrave helps with the final touches of suit donning for astronaut Kenneth D. Cockrell, STS-80 mission commander. The orange suit is a partial pressure launch and entry garment. The crew, initially waved off from its scheduled landing, eventually brought the Columbia home on Dec. 7, 1996.

STS61-S-093 (5 Dec 1993) --- Flight controller Kevin McCluney monitors the televised activity of astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman.  The veteran astronauts were performing the first extravehicular activity (EVA-1) of the STS-61 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) servicing mission.  McCluney's duties deal with maintenance, mechanical, arm and crew systems, meaning that he and his colleagues will be exceptionally busy for the next five days.  Four astronauts in alternating pairs will perform a variety of tasks on the giant telescope during that period.

STS061-105-026 (7 Dec. 1993) --- Astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman signals directions to European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Claude Nicollier, as the latter controls the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm during the third of five Extravehicular Activities (EVA) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) servicing mission. Astronauts Hoffman and F. Story Musgrave earlier changed out the Wide Field\Planetary Camera (WF\PC).

STS033-S-010 (27 Nov 1989) --- The Space Shuttle Discovery, with a crew of five astronauts aboard, touches down on a runway at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California.  The landing occurred at 16:31:02 p.m. (PST), Nov. 27, 1989.  Onboard Discovery for the DOD-devoted mission were astronauts Frederick D. Gregory, John E. Blaha, Kathryn C. Thornton, F. Story Musgrave and Manley L. Carter.

STS61-S-098 (6 DEC 1993) --- Flight director Milton Heflin monitors two space walkers as they change out the Wife Field/Planetary Camera (WFPC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), temporarily berthed in the Space Shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay.  Astronaut Gregory J. Harbaugh, spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM), is at right edge.  Astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Onboard for the eight-day mission were C. Gordon Fullerton, Roy D. Bridges Jr., F. Story Musgrave, Karl J. Henize, Anthony W. England, Loren W. Acton and John-David Bartoe.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The final Space Shuttle flight of 1996 comes to a successful close as the orbiter Columbia touches down on Runway 33 of KSC’s Shuttle Landing Facility. Main gear touchdown occurred at 6:49:05 a.m. EST, Dec. 7. The mission duration of 17 days, 15 hours and 53 minutes establishes a new record for extended Shuttle flight. The five- member STS-80 crew is led by Commander Kenneth D. Cockrell and Pilot Kent V. Rominger. The three mission specialists on board are Tamara E. Jernigan, Thomas D. Jones and Story Musgrave. At age 61, Musgrave is the oldest person ever to fly in space; he also becomes the first person to fly six times on the Shuttle. The two primary payloads of the 80th Shuttle flight are the Orbiting and Retrievable Far and Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrometer-Shuttle Pallet Satellite II (ORFEUS-SPAS II) and the Wake Shield Facility-3 (WSF-3).

S93-33103 (2 Apr 1993) --- Wearing training versions of Space Shuttle Extravehicular Mobility Units (EMU), astronauts F. Story Musgrave and Jeffrey A. Hoffman use the giant pool of the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F) to rehearse for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) repair mission.  The two are working with a full-scale training version of the Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC).  The current WF/PC will be replaced with WF/PC-2.  A total of five extravehicular activity (EVA) sessions will be conducted during the scheduled December mission of the Endeavour.
