A knee brace that uses Space Shuttle propulsion technology has moved a step closer to being available to help knee injury and stroke patients and may possibly benefit patients with birth defects, spinal cord injuries, and post-polio conditions. After years of hard work, inventors at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama, have turned over the final design and prototype to industry partners at Horton's Orthotic Lab in Little Rock, Arkansas for further clinical testing. The device, called the Selectively Lockable Knee Brace, may mean faster, less painful rehabilitation for patients by allowing the knee to move when weight is not on the heel. Devices currently on the market lock the knee in a rigid, straight-leg position, or allow continuous free motion. Pictured here is a knee brace prototype being tested and fitted at Horton's Orthotic Lab. The knee brace is just one example of how space technology is being used to improve the lives of people on Earth. NASA scientists are using satellite data to assess the damage on Florida's Gulf Coast after Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in the state as a Category 4 storm on Sept. 28, 2022.  The Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Caltech created this damage proxy map on Oct. 2, 2022, showing which parts of the Fort Myers area likely suffered storm damage. The map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites, which are operated by the European Space Agency (ESA).  Data from the satellites covered an area of approximately 2,491 square miles (6,452 square kilometers) outlined by the red rectangle. The color variation from pale yellow to red indicates greater drops in radar reflections compared with pre-storm imagery, an indication of possible damage. The Sun glint reflecting off the ocean surfaces allowed man-made features to be seen and photographed by the astronaut crew members.  When a ship or boat goes through the water it disturbs the surface of the water which causes the Sun?s rays to reflect back differently than the surrounding waters.  Photographed on a weekend, this image illustrates how popular recreational boating is around the Fort Myers area.

The Equiaxed Dendritic Solidification Experiment (EDSE) is a material sciences investigation under the Formation of Microstructures/pattern formation discipline. The objective is to study the microstructural evolution of and thermal interactions between several quiaxed crystals growing dendritically in a supercooled melt of a pure and transparent substance under diffusion controlled conditions. George Myers, controls engineer, monitors the thermal environment of a ground test for the EDSE located in the Microgravity Development Laboratory (MDL).

ISS026-E-013115 (28 Dec. 2010) ---  From 220 miles above Earth, one of the Expedition 26 crew members used a 32-mm lens to capture this night time image of much of the Florida peninsula.  The picture needs to be rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise to situate north at the top. St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay and Fort Myers can be easily delineated on the Gulf of Mexico (top in the original orientation) side and the spread-out bright lights of the Orlando area appear near frame center.  Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center can also be spotted on the Atlantic side of Florida, with lights of Jacksonville visible further northward.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  - In the Orbiter Processing Facility, STS-114 crew members look at the new Orbiter Boom Sensor System recently installed in Discovery’s payload bay.  At left are Mission Specialist Charles Camarda and Commander Eileen Collins; at right is Matt Myer, an EVA systems engineer from Johnson Space Center, and Pilot James Kelly.  Behind them can be seen the Canada robotic arm.  Crew members are at KSC for Crew Equipment Interface Test activities.  During CEIT, the crew has an opportunity to get a hands-on look at the orbiter and equipment they will be working with on the mission.  Return to Flight Mission STS-114 will carry the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello, filled with supplies for the International Space Station, and a replacement Control Moment Gyroscope.  Launch of STS-114 has a launch window of May 12 to June 3.

STS030-S-131 (8 May 1989) --- Crewmembers who spent just over four full days in space aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis egress their temporary home for a welcome meeting with terra firma. Astronaut David M. Walker, mission commander, shakes hands with Rear Admiral Richard H. Truly, acting NASA Administrator.  Astronaut Ronald J. Grabe (center frame), pilot, is greeted by Dale D. Myers, Deputy Administrator.  Pictured behind Grabe, from bottom of steps to top, are astronauts Norman E. Thagard, Mary L. Cleave and Mark C. Lee, all mission specialists.  Minutes earlier, the spacecraft?s landing gear came to a stop at 12:44:33 P.M. (PDT), 8 May 1989.  It landed on runway 22, a concrete facility, like a number of other NASA flights.  Still others have landed on unpaved dry lakebed stripes.

Gormel is a co-chair of the SEB. This Hammer Award acknowledges the accomplishments of a joint NASA and Air Force team that established the J-BOSC SEB. The team developed and implemented the acquisition strategy for establishing a single set of base operations and support service requirements for KSC, Cape Canaveral Air Station and Patrick Air Force Base
