KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. --  Service platforms surround Space Shuttle Atlantis as it sits in Highbay 1 inside the Vehicle Assembly Building, while repair work continues on the external tank.  In late February, Atlantis' external tank received hail damage during a severe thunderstorm that passed through the Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 area. Wilson, all mission specialists; Pamela A. Melroy, commander; Daniel M. Tani, Expedition 16 flight engineer; and Paolo A. Nespoli, mission specialist representing the European Space Agency (ESA). Major objectives included the installation of the P6 solar array of the port truss and delivery and installment of Harmony, the Italian-built U.S. Node 2 on the ISS.

Back dropped by Earth's horizon and the blackness of space, the Italian-built U.S. Node 2, Harmony, is featured in Space Shuttle Discovery's cargo bay during the STS-120 mission. This image was photographed by an Expedition 16 crew member on the International Space Station (ISS) while Discovery was docked with the station. The aluminum node is 7.2 meters (23.6 feet) long and 4.4 meters (14.5 feet) in diameter. Its pressurized volume is 75.5 cubic meters (2666 cubic feet), and its launch weight is approximately 14,288 kilograms (31,500 pounds).   The installation of Harmony increases the living and working space inside the station to approximately 500 cubic meters (18,000 cubic feet). It also allows the addition of international laboratories from Europe and Japan to the station.

The STS-120 patch reflects the role of the mission in the future of the space program. The shuttle payload bay carries Node 2, Harmony, the doorway to the future international laboratory elements on the International Space Station (ISS). The star on the left represents the ISS; the red colored points represent the current location of the P6 solar array, furled and awaiting relocation when the crew arrives. During the mission, the crew will move P6 to its final home at the end of the port truss. The gold points represent the P6 solar array in its new location, unfurled and producing power for science and life support. On the right, the moon and Mars can be seen representing the future of NASA. The constellation Orion rises in the background, symbolizing NASA's new exploration vehicle. Through all, the shuttle rises up and away, leading the way to the future.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- At the Operations and Checkout Building, the crew members of space shuttle mission STS-120 wave to well-wishers as they board the bus that will transport them to Launch Pad 39A during their terminal countdown demonstration test activities. In the left row are, from front, Pilot George Zamka and Mission Specialists Stephanie Wilson, Daniel Tani, and Scott Parazynski.
