ISS013-E-80032 (11 Sept. 2006) --- A crewmember aboard the International Space Station captured this unusual angle of the Space Shuttle Atlantis with a digital still camera as the orbiter performed a backflip while it was about 600 feet from the station during its approach. The flip, done on every shuttle mission, allows a full photographic survey of the shuttle heat shield to be taken by the station crew. This image from that survey shows one of the three the main engines and extends to the shuttle's nose at the top of the frame. In between are both orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pods, part of both cargo bay doors, the aft windows of the crew cabin and part of the P3/P4 Integrated Truss Structure, the Ku-band antenna, the remote manipulator system arm and the orbiter boom sensor system (OBSS).

The flame trench, built with concrete and refractory brick, bisects the pad at ground level. It is 490 feet long, 58 feet wide and 42 feet deep. The flame deflector system includes an inverted, V-shaped steel structure covered with a high-temperature concrete material five inches thick that extends across the center of the flame trench. One side of the “V” receives and deflects the flames from the Orbiter main engines; the opposite side deflects the flames from the Solid Rocket Boosters. There are also two movable deflectors at the top of the trench to provide additional protection to Shuttle hardware from the Solid Rocket Booster flames. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Inside NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building, the crawler transporter supporting Space Shuttle Discovery on its mobile launcher platform is ready to roll out to Launch Pad 39B with its cargo. The open area above the crawler is the opening for the exhaust of one of the solid rocket boosters (two other openings are provided for main engines and second booster). The rollout is an important step before launch of Discovery on mission STS-121 to the International Space Station. Four members of the STS-130 Endeavour space shuttle crew visited NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center on March 25 to thank facility personnel for their role in enabling the successful February mission to the International Space Station. Commander George Zamka (l to r), Pilot Terry Virts, and Mission Specialists Kathryn and Robert Behnken presented a video recap of their mission and answered questions from Stennis employees about their work. Hire especially thanked Stennis employees for providing the three main engines that powered the crew on their 14-day mission. On their mission, the STS-130 crew delivered a third connecting module - the Tranquility node - that will increase the space station's interior space for crew members and many life support and environmental control systems. Attached to Tranquility was a cupola, a robotic control station with seven windows to provide a panoramic view of Earth, celestial objects and visiting spacecrafts.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle Endeavour is moments away from launching as sparks fly below the shuttle's main engines. The 'sparklers' are the external ignitors which burn off any concentration of hydrogen present in the vicinity of the engines. The cloud forming behind the shuttle's solid rocket booster and the pad's access arm is created by spray from the water deluge system. Launch of the STS-130 mission to the International Space Station was at 4:14 a.m. EST. This was the second launch attempt for space shuttle Endeavour's STS-130 crew and the final scheduled space shuttle night launch. The first attempt on Feb. 7 was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather. The primary payload for the STS-130 mission to the International Space Station is the Tranquility node, a pressurized module that will provide additional room for crew members and many of the station's life support and environmental control systems. Attached to one end of Tranquility is a cupola, a unique work area with six windows on its sides and one on top. The cupola resembles a circular bay window and will provide a vastly improved view of the station's exterior. The multi-directional view will allow the crew to monitor spacewalks and docking operations, as well as provide a spectacular view of Earth and other celestial objects.
