STS-79 was the fourth in a series of NASA docking missions to the Russian Mir Space Station, leading up to the construction and operation of the International Space Station (ISS). As the first flight of the Spacehab Double Module, STS-79 encompassed research, test and evaluation of ISS, as well as logistics resupply for the Mir Space Station. STS-79 was also the first NASA-Mir American crew member exchange mission, with John E. Blaha (NASA-Mir-3) replacing Shannon W. Lucid (NASA-Mir-2) aboard the Mir Space Station. The lettering of their names either up or down denotes transport up to the Mir Space Station or return to Earth on STS-79. The patch is in the shape of the Space Shuttle’s airlock hatch, symbolizing the gateway to international cooperation in space. The patch illustrates the historic cooperation between the United States and Russia in space. S96-11816 (1 June 1996) --- The space shuttle Atlantis completes the final Earth-bound leg of its journey into space, arriving at the top of the hardstand at Launch Pad 39A. Atlantis is slated for liftoff later this year on the STS-79 mission, the fourth United States Space Shuttle and Russian Mir Space Station docking flight.

Mir had served as both work and home for Lucid for over six months before greeting her American colleagues upon docking of Mir and Atlantis last week. Following her lengthy stay aboard Mir and several days on Atlantis, Lucid went on to spend 188 consecutive days in space before returning to Earth with the STS-79 crew. During the STS-79 mission, the crew used an IMAX camera to document activities aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the various Mir modules.  A hand-held version of the 65mm camera system accompanied the STS-79 crew into space in Atlantis' crew cabin.  NASA has flown IMAX camera systems on many Shuttle missions, including a special cargo bay camera's coverage of other recent Shuttle-Mir rendezvous and/or docking missions.

S95-16678 (September 1995) --- NASA astronauts Shannon W. Lucid and John E. Blaha next year will follow the lead of astronaut Norman E. Thagard's 1995 feat of extended stay aboard Russia's Mir Space Station. Lucid is to accompany the STS-76 crew in March and spend a little over four months aboard Mir before returning to Earth with the STS-79 crew.  Blaha will go into space on the scheduled August mission of STS-79 and after four months aboard Mir will return to Earth with the STS-81 crew.

The Shuttle was rolled back from the pad in July due to the threat from Hurricane Bertha, then rolled back again earlier this week because of Hurricane Fran. The targeted launch date for Atlantis on Mission STS-79 -- the fourth docking between the U.S. Shuttle and Russian Space Station Mir -- is now Sept. 16 at 4:54 a.m. EDT. Astronaut Shannon Lucid is seen egressing from a training version of a soyez spacecraft, during a water survival training session in Russia. In March of 1996, Lucid accompanied the STS-76 crew to the Russian space station, Mir, where she stayed for a little over four months before returning to Earth with the STS-79 crew.

STS79-E-5099 (20 September 1996) --- The crew members have been able to spot two typhoons - the larger Violet, north of the Philippines, and a lesser one called Willie, near Vietnam - and a tropical depression from Earth-orbit, during Flight Day 5.  They aimed the Electronic Still Camera (ESC) at this storm, believed to be Violet, during the early hours of September 20, 1996.

STS079-348-004 (16 Sept. 1996) --- Soon after the space shuttle Atlantis completed its rocket mode ascent to Earth-orbit, astronaut Terrence W. Wilcutt, pilot, begins to ready the Orbiter for ten days of orbiting Earth by activating switches on the flight deck's right overhead panel. Though the launch was a nocturnal one, the crew experienced its first sunrise just after Atlantis achieved its orbital posture.

STS079-E-5100 (20 September 1996) --- The crew aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis was able to track the large Typhoon Violet in the western Pacific Ocean.  At the beginning of the mission, Violet was south and west of Japan, and packed winds of 140 - 150 miles per hour.  Four days into the flight, about the time this Electronic Still Camera (ESC) view was recorded and downlinked to Earth, Violet became extra-tropical, but she still had winds up to 90 knots (nautical miles per hour).

STS79-E-5385 (16 - 26 September 1996)   --- The Atlas Mountains, as seen from the Space Shuttle Atlantis, apparently have not changed much in 35 years of Earth observations from space as testified by astronaut Jerome (Jay) Apt, who took this picture with an Electronic Still Camera (ESC).  Astronaut John Glenn on NASA's MA-6 mission, took the first image of this area from space.

STS079-785-103 (16-26 Sept. 1996) --- In this 70mm frame from the space shuttle Atlantis, the Brazilian state of Rondonia is featured. The photograph shows some of the major settlements and the habitat fragmentation caused by large agriculture programs in Brazil. The Rondonia state in southwestern Brazil is an area of about 240,000 square kilometers (92,000 square miles). Approximately 11.5% of the tropical forests in Rondonia have been cleared since 1970. There are indicators showing that roughly 20% of the cleared land is reverting back to scrub every year due to low fertility. Space Shuttle photography of this region has documented the forest clearing since the mid 1980's. This view adds to the large database of imagery, including other satellite-based imagery, and provides a natural color view of the region.

NM22-427-023 (20 Sept. 1996) --- This photograph of the space shuttle Atlantis was taken from approximately 170 feet away by astronaut Shannon W. Lucid, winding up her duties as cosmonaut guest researcher onboard Russia?s Mir Space Station. Lucid was in Mir?s Base Block Module. The Spacehab double module, a first time space flyer, is seen in the aft payload bay.  Its tunnel can be seen connecting to both Atlantis? crew cabin and the androgynous docking adapter.  Also seen in the forward bay is the Ku-band antenna used for communications. Though not recognizable in this photo, several Atlantis crew members had their ?noses to the windows? as NASA was about to make its first crew member exchange with Mir. Astronaut John E. STS79-E-5090 (19 September 1996) --- Cosmonaut Valeri G. Korzun, Mir-22 commander, greets his American counterpart - astronaut William F. This mission marks the fourth such reunion involving astronauts and cosmonauts during the Shuttle era and the fifth overall, going back to the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) in 1975.

This marks the second rollback for Atlantis since July because of hurricane threats. Atlantis, which is targeted for liftoff later this month on the STS-79 Shuttle mission, is returning to the VAB because of the threat from Hurrican Fran. The threat of Hurrican Bertha forced the rollback of Atlantis in July. Atlantis is currently scheduled for launch on the fourth Shuttle-MIR docking mission around mid-September

STS079-302-006 (16-26 Sept. 1996) --- Astronauts Jerome (Jay) Apt (right) and Carl E. Walz, both mission specialists, tilt the Active Rack Isolation System (ARIS) hardware which was included on this flight to evaluate conditions and hardware requirements for the International Space Station (ISS). The ARIS is designed to isolate certain experiments from major disturbances that are expected to be found on the ISS, such as vibrations caused by the movement of mechanisms and crew members and the operation of equipment. STS-79 was chosen for the inclusion of the experiment because the Shuttle-Mir complex more closely approximates the acceleration environment of the ISS.

STS079-S-125 (16-26 Sept. 1996) --- Following undocking from the Space Shuttle Atlantis, Russia's Mir Space Station is backdropped against dark blue water on Earth, though it appears to be surrounded by the blackness of space.  During the STS-79 mission, the crew used an IMAX camera to document Intravehicular Activities (IVA) aboard the Atlantis and the various Mir modules, as well as to record both docking and undocking activities through Atlantis' windows.  NASA has flown IMAX camera systems on many Shuttle missions, including a special cargo bay camera's coverage of other recent Shuttle-Mir rendezvous and/or docking missions.

STS079-354-016 (20 Sept. 1996) --- Astronaut Thomas D. Akers, mission specialist, spends a few moments of his off-duty time aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis in a rare relaxed posture.  Akers is on the aft flight deck, looking toward overhead windows (out of frame) through which he could see several of the components of Russia's Mir Space Station, docked for several days to Atlantis.  Later, during a post-flight presentation to an assembly of co-workers in Houston, astronaut William F. Readdy, mission commander, recalled this moment as the only one on the STS-79 flight during which he witnessed Akers not busy with transfer chores or Spacehab experiment tasks.  Several pieces of camera equipment and a stowed chair used during launch and entry are identifiable among the items on the flight deck.

S96-10557 (May 1996) --- The original Mir-22 crew assigned to duty aboard Russia's Mir Space Station poses with the STS-81 crew.  The cosmonauts, flanking astronaut Marsha S. Ivins on the top row, are Gennadiy M. Manakov (left) mission commander; and Pavel V. Vinogradov, flight engineer. After this photo was taken, a shift of Russian crew assignments occurred and Manakov and Vinogradov were replaced with Valeri G. Korzun and Aleksandr Y. Kaleri.  The astronauts are, front row (left to right): Jerry M. Linenger, Brent W. Jett, Jr., and John E. Blaha.  Second row, left to right, John W. Grunsfeld, Michael A. Baker and Peter J. K. (Jeff) Wisoff.  All the STS-81 crewmembers except Blaha are scheduled to be launched in December 1996 aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis and those six will be joined by Mir-22 cosmonaut researcher Blaha when the two spacecraft are joined in Earth-orbit.  Blaha will have been launched into Earth-orbit to connect with Russia's Mir Space Station on an earlier mission - STS-79 - of the space shuttle Atlantis, scheduled for launch in the summer of 1996. Cape Canaveral, Fla. -- Hall of Fame astronaut Joe Allen thanks the audience for their applause at the 2011 U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame induction ceremony at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.          Hall of Fame astronauts and visitors gathered to honor 2011 inductees Karol "Bo" Bobko and Susan Helms. During his 19 years in the astronaut program, Bobko flew on three space shuttle missions and logged more than 386 hours in space. He served as pilot during the first voyage of space shuttle Challenger aboard STS-6 in April 1983 and as commander during the maiden flight of space shuttle Atlantis aboard STS-51J in October 1985. Helms, a five-time space shuttle astronaut, has logged 5,064 hours in space. During her stay onboard the International Space Station as a member of the Expedition-2 crew in 2001, Helms performed a world record 8 hour and 56 minute spacewalk.
