The new era in space flight began on April 12, 1981. That is when the first Space Shuttle mission (STS-1) was launched. The Marshall Space Flight Center developed the propulsion system for the Space Shuttle. The giant Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) where Columbia had been mated to its external fuel tank and two solid rockets is in the background.  Touchdown occurred at 8:09 a.m. (EST), March 18, 1994. Students display an experiment that will fly in SPACEHAB on Space Shuttle Columbia on mission STS-107. SPACEHAB's complement of commercial experiments includes six educational experiments designed and developed by students in six different countries under the auspices of Space Technology and Research Students (STARS), a global education program managed by SPACEHAB subsidiary Space Media. The countries represented are Australia, China, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein and the United States. The student investigators who conceived these experiments will monitor their operations in space. The experiments will be housed in BioServe Space Technologies' Isothermal Containment Module (ICM --a small temperature-controlled facility that provides experiment support such as physical containment, lighting, and video imaging) and stowed in a middeck-size locker aboard the SPACEHAB Research Double Module.

The 122 foot tall Space Shuttle Orbiter Columbia mated to its external fuel container (ET) and two solid rocket boosters (SRB) lifts off from Launch Pad 39A for the begining of STS-2.

On an orbiter transporter, Columbia is ready for its move to the Shuttle Landing Facility's (SLF) Mate-Demate Device (MDD), in the distance at the top of the photo. Seen next to the MDD is the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft which will carry the orbiter piggyback in a ferry flight to Palmdale, Calif. On the rear of the orbiter can be seen the tail cone, a fairing that is installed over the aft fuselage of the orbiter to decrease aerodynamic drag and buffet when the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is transporting the orbiter cross-country. It is 36 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 22 feet high. Columbia, the oldest of four orbiters in NASA's fleet, will undergo extensive inspections and modifications in Boeing's Orbiter Assembly Facility during a nine-month orbiter maintenance down period (OMDP), the second in its history. Orbiters are periodically removed from flight operations for an OMDP. Columbia's first was in 1994. Along with more than 100 modifications on the vehicle, Columbia will be the second orbiter to be outfitted with the multifunctional electronic display system, or 'glass cockpit.' Columbia is expected to return to KSC in July 2000.

The spacecraft renews flight after a period of three and a half years, this time with five crewmembers aboard. Onboard the spacecraft are astronauts Brewster H. Shaw Jr., Richard N. Richards, David C. Leestma, James C. Adamson and Mark N. Brown. The last time Columbia was in space was in January of 1986.

Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-50) launched into history carrying crew of seven and its payload was comprised of the US Microgravity Laboratory 1 (USML-1).The USML-1 was one of NASA's missions dedicated to scientific investigations in a microgravity environment inside the Spacelab module. Investigations aboard the USML-1 included: materials science, fluid dynamics, biotechnology (crystal growth), and combustion science. Managed by Marshall Space Flight Center, the STS-50 mission was plarned for a 13-day duration, the mission ended with 14 days in space, the longest Shuttle mission to date.

STS080-731-009 (19 Nov.-7 Dec. 1996) --- The space shuttle Columbia astronauts photographed this Southern Hemisphere cyclone named Daniella, as it gathered force off the east coast of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Being in the Southern Hemisphere it spins clockwise, just the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere hurricanes and typhoons.

STS093-708-037 (23-27 July 1999) --- Sunset paints the ocean and low clouds with brilliant color and shadow just off the eastern coast of Brazil in the western South Atlantic in this photo from the Space Shuttle Columbia's 35th orbit.  Since one orbit of the shuttle around the Earth only takes 90 minutes, every 45 minutes the astronauts can witness a sunrise or sunset.  The shuttle was flying at a point located over 1.4 degrees north latitude and 26.9 west longitude.

Liftoff occurred at 12:12:23:0534 p.m. (EDT) on June 25, 1992. The modified Columbia is NASA's first Extended Duration Orbiter (EDO). Five NASA astronauts and two scientists/payload specialists are aboard. The seven will divide into two shifts to support United States Microgravity Laboratory 1 (USML-1) research.

The scene was in the South Pacific Ocean southwest of Hawaii and west of Christmas Island.  The angle of the space shuttle Columbia and the sunglint feature gives the picture an almost three-dimensional affect.

STS065-S-048 (8 July 1994) --- The Space Shuttle Columbia, with six NASA astronauts and a Japanese payload specialist aboard, heads toward Earth-orbit.  A short time later, the crew began setting up the science module for two weeks of experimentation in support of the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2).  Launch occurred at 12:43 p.m. (EDT), July 8, 1994.  Onboard were astronauts Robert D. Cabana, James D. Halsell, Jr., Richard J. Hieb, Carl E. Walz, Leroy Chiao, and Donald A. Thomas along with NASDA payload specialist Dr. Chiaki Mukai.

STS080-759-038 (19 Nov.-7 Dec. 1996) --- As photographed by the crewmembers aboard the space shuttle Columbia, a full moon is about to set beyond the limb of Earth.  A full moon should be round but when it is near the limb, or edge of Earth, the atmosphere tends to distort the shape.  The atmosphere, stratosphere, ionosphere is in reality acting as a lens, thus the distorted shape of the Moon.  As the Moon reaches the Earth's horizon it will become "eggshaped".

Faylakah Awhah Island is seen in the Persian Gulf to the bottom right.  Most of the darkened areas represent the residual from oil well fires during the Gulf War of the early 1990?s.

STS009-03-093 (28 Nov-8 Dec 1983) --- A mission specialist and two payload specialists busy themselves in the Spacelab 1 module aboard the Earth orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia.  Left to right are Payload Specialist Robert A. R. Parker.  Parker is partially obscured by a deployed instrument of the fluid physics module at the materials sciences double rack.  Merbold, a physicist from Max-Planck Institute in the Federal Republic of Germany, wears a head band-like device and a recorder as part of an overall effort to learn more about space adaptation.  Both Space lab 1 payload specialists wore the devices during most of their waking hours on this 10-day flight.  The frame was exposed with a 35mm camera.

Astronauts Pierre J. Thuot and Marsha S. Ivins communicate with ground controllers during operations and observations with DEE.  During the 14-day mission, three of the five STS-62 crewmembers took turns operating and observing the RMS in a series of one-hour sessions.

Space Shuttle Columbia nears its touchdown on Runway 22 at Edwards, California, at 8:39 a.m., 14 June 1991, as the STS-40 life sciences mission comes to an end at NASA's Ames-Dryden Flight Research Facility (later redesignated Dryden Flight Research Center) after nine days of orbital flight. Aboard Columbia during the extended mission were Bryan D. O'Connor, mission commander; Sidney M. Gutierrez, pilot; mission specialists James P. Bagian, Tamara E. Jernigan, and Margaret Rhea Seddon; and payload specialists Francis Andrew Gaffney and Millie Hughes-Fulford. STS-40 was the first space shuttle mission dedicated to life sciences research to explore how the body reacts to a weightless environment and how it readjusts to gravity on return to earth. Andrews Air Force Base is seen east southwest of Washington D.C. at the right edge of the photo.  Dulles International Airport is located west of the city on the left edge of the photo.  Green vegetation shows up as red in the color infrared image.

STS093-704-087 (23-27 July 1999) --- This low angle, early morning shot over Chile was photographed from the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia during the STS-93 mission.  In the words of one of the scientists studying the STS-93 Earth imagery, Laguna Verde, in the Atacama Province of Chile (near the Argentine border), lies like a turquoise jewel among the stark black and white snow covered volcanic peaks of the High Andes.  The ambient elevation in this part of the Andes is 16,000 feet (4,877 meters) with the highest local peak, Nevada Ojas de Salado (just to the right of the lake), reaching to 23,240 feet. (7084 meters.)

STS093-709-046 (23-27 July 1999) --- The STS-93 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia took this picture featuring the Northern Territory of Australia.  Melville Island (bottom) and Bathurst Island are across Clarence Strait just north of the city of Darwin.  According to scientists studying the STS-93 photo collection, seasonal fires are common in the region.  Winter is the season for agricultural land clearing of the native monsoon forests.  Smoke from the fires on the islands is being blown northwest by the prevailing winter winds.  Data back information on the 70mm film that recorded this image lists time and date as  05:38:45 GMT, July 25, 1999.  When the photo was taken, the shuttle was flying over a point located at 18.4 degrees south latitude and 118.7 east longitude.
