We will use a pulsed laser system, located at the Kennedy Space Center that will be synchronized with an atomic clock. Laser pulses will propagate from the ground to the orbiting CHOMPTT CubeSat and back. By precisely measuring the time of emission and detection of these pulses on the ground and in space we can calculate the time discrepancy between the ground atomic clock and the atomic clock on CHOMPTT. Our goal is to do this with an accuracy of 0.2 billionths of a second, or the time it takes light to travel just 6 centimeters. In the future, we envision using this technology on constellations or swarms of small satellites, for example orbiting the Moon, to equip them with precision navigation, networking, and ranging capabilities. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Students from the University of Florida, University of Central Florida and the University of Puerto Rico brainstorm ideas during the 2013 International Space Apps Challenge, or ISAC, at The Astronaut Memorial Foundation’s Center for Space Education in Florida.  During the worldwide two-day challenge, more than 9,000 people and 484 organizations came together in 83 cities across 44 countries, as well as online, to develop new ways of solving challenges that NASA faces. At Kennedy, four teams brainstormed ideas with subject matter experts and others and worked nearly 32 hours straight to present their concepts to a panel of three technical and non-technical judges. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  - During the 2005 FIRST Robotics Regional Competition held at the University of Central Florida March 10-12, Center Director Jim Kennedy (left) greets fellow NASA employees, referee Maggi Dutczak and Laurel Lichtenberger, Planning Committee chair for the competition.  NASA and the University of Central Florida are co-hosts of the regional event. The competition stages short games played by remote-controlled robots, which are designed and built in six weeks by a team of high school students and a handful of engineers-mentors. The Swarmathon University Competition 2019 team members from the University of Maryland participate in activities at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida on June 11, 2019. They are standing in front of a poster they created for the poster competition portion of Swarmathon. The University of New Mexico was the host for the physical competition held in May 2019. The student teams were at Kennedy to participate in a student/mentor panel, hear from speakers, get a behind-the-scenes tour of Kennedy Space Center, dine with an astronaut and receive awards during an awards ceremony. During Swarmathon University Challenge IV, students developed algorithms for robotic swarms that are robust and adaptable like the foraging strategies of ant colonies. The fourth and final Swarmathon was a combined virtual and physical competition.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  -  During the 2006 FIRST Robotics Regional Competition held March 9-11 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida Governor Jeb Bush poses with the student team from Harmony High School in Florida called The Harmony Hurricanes.  The high school was teamed with DeVry University, Disney World and the Town of Harmony.   The FIRST  Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions.  FIRST, which is based on "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," redefines winning for these students. Teams are rewarded for excellence in design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism and maturity, and ability to overcome obstacles. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last.  NASA and the University of Central Florida are co-sponsors of the regional event, which this year included more than 50 teams. A researcher from the University of Florida in Gainesville, checks the Dust Atmospheric Recovery Technology, or DART, spacecraft in a laboratory inside the Space Life Sciences Lab at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. DART will characterize the dust loading and microbial diversity in the atmosphere over Florida during summer months with a special emphasis on their interactions during an African dust storm. DART will be used to collect atmospheric aerosols and suspended microbial cells over Florida and Kennedy. Results will help predict the risks of excessive microbial contamination adhering to spacecraft surfaces.

Employees get an up-close look at some Florida marine life during a visit to the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences booth at Kennedy Space Center’s annual Earth Day celebration. The two-day event featured approximately 50 exhibitors offering information on a variety of topics, including electric vehicles, sustainable lighting, renewable energy, Florida-friendly landscaping tips, Florida’s biking trails and more.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – A panel session for participants in the International Space University's Space Studies Program 2012, or SSP, is held in the Operations Support Building II at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Soffen Memorial Panel session provided the opportunity for participants to engage with today's leaders in the planetary science field. The panel session is named in honor of Gerald Soffen, NASA scientist and leader of NASA's Viking Mars mission. The nine-week intensive SSP course is designed for post-graduate university students and professionals during the summer. The program is hosted by a different country each year, providing a unique educational experience for participants from around the globe. NASA Kennedy Space Center and Florida Tech are co-hosting this year's event which runs from June 4 to Aug. 3. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. --  At the opening ceremony for the new program known as SABRE, Space Agricultural Biotechnology Research and Education, four of the speakers gather around the SABRE poster.  From left are University of Florida Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources Mike Martin, U.S. Representative Dave Weldon, Center Director Roy D. Involving UF and NASA,  SABRE will focus on the discovery, development and application of the biological aspects of advanced life support strategies. The program will include faculty from UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, who will be located at both KSC - in the state-owned Space Experiment Research and Processing Laboratory (SERPL) being built there - and UF in Gainesville. Robert Ferl, professor in the horticultural sciences department and assistant director of the University of Florida Biotechnology Program, will direct and be responsible for coordinating the research and education efforts of UF and NASA.

Dynamac Corp. leases the facility. The Florida Space Research Institute is responsible for gaining additional tenants from outside the NASA community.
