ISS020-E-021848 (18 July 2009) --- Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata (right), Expedition 19/20 flight engineer, and astronaut Doug Hurley, STS-127 pilot, share intravehicular support to the first two spacewalkers who will be performing work on the International Space Station over the next week. The astronauts changed out the International  Space Station's glacier with a new one on March 20 to return urine, saliva, and blood samples from the Expedition 18 crew to Earth with Discovery's STS-119 astronauts. Wakata will be serving with both the current (Expedition 18) and the following (Expedition 19) crews aboard the station.

ISS039-E-020699 (13 May 2014) ---  Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata, Expedition 39 commander, places his crew patch on a wall in the Quest airlock of the Earth-orbiting International Space Station. A short time later, Wakata joined Expedition 39 Soyuz Commander Mikhail Tyurin of Roscosmos and Flight Engineer Rick Mastracchio of NASA as they departed the orbital outpost in a Soyuz vehicle. Wakata had spent a great deal of time in Quest as he assisted spacewalks from the shirt-sleeve environment of the orbital outpost on both Expedition 38 and 39.

ISS020-E-022321 (18 July 2009) --- On the second day of joint activities between the STS-127 astronauts and ISS Expedition 20 crew members, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette and Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata are pictured onboard the orbital outpost. They are among 11 astronauts and cosmonauts who remained inside the shuttle and station to provide support while two crew members performed the first spacewalk to continue work on the station. Wakata has been serving as a flight engineer onboard ISS, but converts to an STS-127 missison specialist until returning home aboard Endeavour later this month.
