The gray cone is the back shell, which together with the heat shield forms a protective aeroshell around the stowed InSight lander. The photo was taken during preparation for vibration testing of the spacecraft.  InSight, for Interior Exploration Using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is scheduled for launch in March 2016 and landing in September 2016. It will study the deep interior of Mars to advance understanding of the early history of all rocky planets, including Earth.  Note: After thorough examination, NASA managers have decided to suspend the planned March 2016 launch of the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) mission. InSight Aeroshell Coming Together
In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, workers prepare the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) aeroshell for transfer to a rotation stand. Set to launch in 2003, the MER Mission will consist of two identical rovers designed to cover roughly 110 yards (100 meters) each Martian day. Each rover will carry five scientific instruments that will allow it to search for evidence of liquid water that may have been present in the planet's past. The rovers will be identical to each other, but will land at different regions of Mars. The first rover has a launch window opening May 30, and the second rover a window opening June 25, 2003.

The aeroshell containing NASA's Perseverance rover guides itself towards the Martian surface as it descends through the atmosphere in this illustration. Hundreds of critical events must execute perfectly and exactly on time for the rover to land on Mars safely on Feb. 18, 2021.  Entry, Descent, and Landing, or "EDL," begins when the spacecraft reaches the top of the Martian atmosphere, traveling nearly 12,500 mph (20,000 kph).  The cruise stage separates about 10 minutes before entering into the atmosphere, leaving the aeroshell, which encloses the rover and descent stage, to make the trip to the surface. The vehicle fires small thrusters on the backshell to reorient itself and make sure the heat shield is facing forward. The spacecraft uses the Martian atmosphere to brake, causing it to heat up dramatically. Peak heating occurs about 80 seconds after atmospheric entry. The rover is safe in the aeroshell, and reaches only about room temperature. Peak deceleration occurs about 10 seconds later (~90 seconds after atmospheric entry). As it descends through the atmosphere, the spacecraft fires thrusters on its backshell to guide itself. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. --  Technicians prepared for removal of Viking Lander 1's aeroshell cover in KSC's Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility 2 (SAEF-2) today.  The cover remains over the Lander throughout its 440,000,000-mile journey to Mars.  After the Lander separates from the Orbiter, the aeroshell will help to decelerate the speed of descent and will serve as a heat shield.  After the aeroshell separates, the Lander's parachute will deploy at about 4,000 feet altitude to further slow descent for a soft landing on the Red Planet.  The Kennedy Space Center will launch the first Viking from Complex 41, Cape Canaveral, no earlier than Aug. 11.  The second Viking will be launched no earlier than Aug. 21.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  The aeroshell enclosing Mars Exploration Rover 2 and lander rests on a stand in the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility.  The aeroshell will undergo a spin stabilization test.  There are two identical rovers that will land at different regions of Mars and are designed to cover roughly 110 yards each Martian day over various terrain. Each rover will carry five scientific instruments that will allow it to search for evidence of liquid water that may have been present in the planet’s past.  The first rover, MER-A, is scheduled to launch June 5 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.  The second is scheduled for launch June 25.
