ISS034-E-067298 (12 March 2013) --- One of the Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station recorded this image of much of Galveston Island (right hand two-thirds of the photo), which is annually a popular "spring break" spot for students and vacationers from all over. The activities were just getting started when this photo was made -- about ten days before the "official" start of spring. The west end of Bolivar Peninsula is visible in the lower left quadrant of the image. The Bolivar area looks much different from the way it appeared prior to the devastating Hurricane Ike in September 2008.

The vehicle has undergone an extensive modification period, including the addition of all of the return-to-flight safety upgrades added to both Discovery and Atlantis. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - This photo shows the size of the sensors being placed on the wing leading edge of orbiter Discovery. In her hand, United Space Alliance technician Lisa Campbell holds an accelerometer (left), which will eventually be installed on a mounting nut. The sensors are part of the Wing Leading Edge Impact Detection System, a new safety measure added for all future Space Shuttle missions. The system also includes accelerometers that monitor the orbiter's wings for debris impacts during launch and while in orbit. There are 22 temperature sensors and 66 accelerometers on each wing. Sensor data will flow from the wing to the crew compartment, where it will be transmitted to Earth.

STS007-14-629 (21 June 1983) --– Astronaut Sally K. Ride, STS-7 mission specialist, performs a number of functions simultaneously, proving the necessity for versatility and dexterity in space travel. Floating freely on the flight deck, Dr. Ride communicates with ground controllers in Houston, moves within feet of important reference data, hand calculators and other aids all at the same time. She is one of the five astronaut crew members for the Challenger’s second orbital mission. Her head is in the station normally occupied by the pilot (in this case, Frederick H. (Rick) Hauck) and her feet are anchored at the station for the crew commander (in this case, Robert L. Crippen). Photo credit: NASA

This photograph was taken August 15, 1956. Mary Jackson first person in the front row right side. Mary Jackson began at Langley in 1951 as a computer. She was later assigned to work at the 4-Foot by 4-Foot Supersonic Pressure Tunnel where she worked with Kazimierz "Kaz" Czarnecki, who encouraged her to become an engineer. To attend the university extension engineering classes held at the then all-white Hampton High School, Jackson was required to petition the courts, which she did successfully. The 4’ x 4’ Supersonic Pressure Tunnel was the NACA’s first supersonic wind tunnel. At the time of the photo, Mary Jackson was still a human computer, but was participating in the hands-on experimental work. Mrs. Jackson had begun her studies to be an engineer in the Spring of the same year the photo was taken. She obtained a degree in aerospace engineering in 1958.
