Members of STARC, a non-profit organization in Slidell, La., that seeks to help people with disabilities lead meaningful, productive lives, pose with their appreciation awards during Disability Awareness Day at Stennis Space Center on Oct. 15. The group members received appreciation awards for their dedicated service to the rocket engine testing facility. Disability Awareness Day was hosted by the Stennis Diversity Council and included guest speakers from several area agencies.

Former NASA scientist Kantis Simmons, an author and speaker, addresses NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center team members Oct. 29 during the National Disability Awareness Month presentation, “The Right Talent, Right Now.” Simmons’ humorous discussion focused on growing up with a birth defect and overcoming the self-doubts that can bring. “Quit looking at what you don’t have and think about all the amazing things you do have,” Simmons said.

Taxiway Navigation and Situtation Awareness (TNAS) system will help pilots taxi safely, particularly in low visibility weather conditions using a combination of cockpit displays and the GPS satellite positioning system. Narrower than a standard doorway, the Segway is clean and quiet, with zero emissions. The two-day event was held April 22-23 around the Center.

Guest speaker Sinead Burke, from Ireland, gave a presentation on “Breaking the Mould – A Lesson in Equity,” to Kennedy Space Center employees on Nov. 30, 2022, and to employees at other NASA centers via live stream on YouTube. The event was sponsored by the center’s Disability Awareness and Action Working Group (DAAWG) and the Spaceport Integration Directorate. Burke, who is an advocate for the inclusion of all, amplifies the voices who are often not considered.
