Shuttle crew escape systems test is conducted by astronauts Steven R. Nagel (left) and Manley L. (Sonny) Carter in JSC One Gravity Mockup and Training Facilities Bldg 9A crew compartment trainer (CCT). Nagel and Carter are evaluating methods for crew escape during Space Shuttle controlled gliding flight. JSC test was done in advance of tests scheduled for facilities in California and Utah. Here, Carter serves as test subject evaluating egress positioning for the tractor rocket escape method - one of the two systems currently being closely studied by NASA.

S93-48458 (5 Nov. 1993) --- In the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) Shuttle mockup and integration laboratory, the five crew members training for NASA's next mission are assisted in donning their partial pressure launch and entry suits. From left to right are astronaut John H. Casper, Andrew M. Allen, Pierre J. Thuot, Charles D. (Sam) Gemar and Marsha S. Ivins. Minutes later the crew was in the crew compartment trainer (CCT) rehearsing their scheduled March 1994 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. Launch, landing and emergency egress procedures were covered in the training session.

S89-45735 (Sept 1989) --- Five astronauts take a break from training for NASA's STS-34 mission to pose for a photo in the crew compartment trainer (CCT) in the Shuttle mockup and integration lab at JSC. Left to right are Astronauts Michael J. McCulley, pilot; Shannon W. Lucid, Franklin R. Chang-Diaz and Ellen S. Baker, all mission specialists; and Donald E. Williams, mission commander. They are wearing the orange partial pressure suits for the ascent and entry phase of flight. Their launch aboard the Atlantis is scheduled for Oct. 12. The photograph was made by Bill Bowers, a crew trainer at JSC.

S89-51626 (18 Dec 1989) --- The astronaut crewmembers of the STS-36 mission occupy the flight deck of the crew compartment trainer in the Johnson Space Center's Space Shuttle mockup and integration laboratory. They are, left to right, Astronauts John H. Casper, pilot; Pierre J. Thuot, David C. Hilmers and Richard M. (Mike) Mullane, mission specialists; and John O. Creighton, mission commander. Mullane will be stationed on the mid deck for launch, while Thuot will man that position during entry. The photograph was made by William H. Bowers, crew photo instructor.

JSC2010-E-024602 (11 Feb. 2010) --- The STS-134 crew members, attired in training versions of their shuttle launch and entry suits, await the start of a training session in the crew compartment trainer (CCT-2) in the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Pictured from the left are NASA astronauts Mark Kelly, commander; Michael Fincke, mission specialist; Gregory H. Johnson, pilot; European Space Agency astronaut Roberto Vittori, NASA astronauts Greg Chamitoff and Andrew Feustel, all mission specialists.

S93-50649 (Dec 1993) --- Cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, mission specialist for the STS-60 mission, gets assistance with his launch and entry suit from Lockheed's Max Kandler during a training session at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Others pictured, left to right, are astronauts Franklin R. Chang-Diaz, Ronald M. Sega and N. Jan Davis. This particular phase of training, conducted in the crew compartment trainer in the Shuttle mockup and integration laboratory, familiarizes the crew members with entry activities and launch countdown procedures, as well as emergency egress procedures.

STS-65 Japanese Payload Specialist Chiaki Mukai takes a break from training at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Wearing a training version of the orange launch and entry suit (LES), Mukai stands at the crew compartment trainer (CCT) side hatch in the Mockup and Integration Laboratory (MAIL) Bldg 9NE. Note the crew escape system (CES) pole device extending out the side hatch which would accommodate crewmembers in bailout from a troubled spacecraft. Mukai represents the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan and will serve as a payload specialist aboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, during the STS-65 International Microgravity Laboratory 2 (IML-2) mission.
