Confetti is launched as the spaceport's historic countdown clock is dedicated as the newest display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Now located at the entrance to the visitor complex, the spaceport's historic countdown clock was used starting with the launch of Apollo 12 on Nov. 14, 1969. Originally set up at the space center's Press Site, the clock operated through the final space shuttle mission, STS-135, launched on July 8, 2011. The old countdown clock was replaced in 2014 with a modern light emitting diode, or LED, display.

Three years after embarking on a historic exploration of the red planet and six miles away from its landing site, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity is traversing "Victoria Crater" ridge by ridge, peering at layered cliffs in the interior. To identify various alcoves and cliffs along the way, science team members are using names of places visited by the 16th-century Earth explorer Ferdinand Magellan and his crew aboard the ship Victoria, who proved the Earth is round. With the countdown clock at the NASA Kenney Space Center Press Site in the foreground, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifts off from Launch Complex 39A at the Florida spaceport. It was the company's 10th commercial resupply services mission to the International Space Station. Liftoff was at 9:39 a.m. EST from the historic launch site now operated by SpaceX under a property agreement with NASA. The Dragon spacecraft will deliver about 5,500 pounds of supplies, such as the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) III instrument to further study ozone in the atmosphere.

Coastal waves are inspired by the historic Florida launch site, and on a larger scale represent our blue planet, the global ocean connecting all continents. A falcon, with the number nine as its beak and a crescent moon as its eye, is a nod to the Falcon 9 rocket, while the constellation Draco honors the Dragon spacecraft that will take Crew-9 to their destination. The Delta symbol, first used in 1961, evokes historic ties to the earliest days of space endeavors. Human exploration of space is built on international collaboration and depends on the support of multitudes across the globe whose efforts honor that heritage.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  Visitors at the Kennedy Space Center's Banana River viewing site stay focused on the historic ride of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121 as it rockets into the blue sky for an historic launch -- the first ever on Independence Day.  Liftoff was on-time at 2:38 p.m. EDT.  During the 12-day mission, the STS-121 crew of seven will test new equipment and procedures to improve shuttle safety, as well as deliver supplies and make repairs to the International Space Station. The first SpaceX launch from the historic Apollo and space shuttle site was this past February. In early August 2017, the Cinder Butte fire burned 9 miles (15 kilometers) outside of the town of Riley, Oregon, and consumed more than 82 square miles (53,000 acres) of forest and brushland. The fire threatened tribal archaeological sites with strong significance to the Burns Paiute and Klamath tribes. Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it could damage the historic sites. On the image, the burned area is gray-brown, and cloud shadows are dark gray-to-black. The tower is one of two that were identified for demolition.  The old towers are being toppled as part of the ongoing project to demolish the historic site to prevent corrosion from becoming a safety concern.   A majority of the steel will be recycled and the rest will be taken to the landfill at CCAFS.  Complex 36 was the birthplace of NASA's planetary launch program.  It was built for the Atlas/Centaur development program and was operated under NASA's sponsorship until the late 1980s. Complex 36 hosted many historic missions over the years including Surveyor that landed on the moon and Mariner that orbited Mars and included one to Mercury.  Two of the most historic launches were the Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes that were launched to Jupiter and are now outside of the solar system in interstellar space.  Also, the historic Pioneer Venus spacecraft included an orbiter and a set of probes that were dispatched to the surface.
