The Roman Coronagraph Instrument, a technology demonstration that will be part of NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, is seen amid testing at the agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California in December 2023. Studying what happened when tells geologists about the history of Mars. A crater that punched through the surface of Mars reveals multiple layers formed previously below the surface. Half of the crater was then destroyed by the opening of the channel. Small craters pepper the ejecta blanket of the larger crater but a few are visible in the channel, another clue to its younger age. This image of a southern mid-latitude crater was intended to investigate the lineated material on the crater floor. At the higher resolution of HiRISE, the image reveals a landscape peppered by small impact craters. These craters range from about 30 meters in diameter down to the resolution limit (about 2 meter diameter in this image acquired by averaging 2x2 picture elements). Such dense clusters of small craters are frequently formed by secondary craters, caused by the impact of material that was excavated and ejected from the surface of Mars during the creation of a larger nearby crater by the impact of a comet or an asteroid. Secondary impact craters are both interesting and vexing. They are interesting because they show the trajectories of the material that was ejected from the primary impact with the greatest speeds, typically material from near the surface of the blast zone. Secondary craters are often found along the traces of crater rays, linear features that extend radially from fresh impact craters and can reach many crater diameters in length. Secondary craters can be useful when crater rays are visible and the small craters can be associated with a particular primary impact crater. They can be used to constrain the age of the surface where they fell, since the surface must be older than the impact event. The age of the crater can be approximately estimated from the probability of an impact that produced a crater of such a size within a given area of Mars over a given time period. But these secondary craters can also be perplexing when no crater rays are preserved and a source crater is not easily identifiable, as is the case here. The impact that formed these secondary craters took place long enough ago that their association with a particular crater has been erased. They do not appear along the trace of a crater ray that is still apparent in visible or thermal infrared observations. These secondary craters complicate the task of estimating the age of the lineated material on the crater floor. It is necessary to distinguish secondary craters from the primary impacts that we rely upon to estimate the ages of Martian surfaces. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Seen on KSC grounds, a robin pauses in a Brazilian pepper tree filled with red berries. Robins range throughout North America, preferring gardens, open woodland, agricultural land, as well as towns. The birds are usually considered a harbinger of spring, and can be seen in large flocks throughout Florida in January and February, especially as they gather for northern migration. Kennedy Space Center shares a boundary with the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge encompasses 92,000 acres that are a habitat for more than 331 species of birds, 31 mammals, 117 fishes, and 65 amphibians and reptiles. The marshes and open water of the refuge provide wintering areas for 23 species of migratory waterfowl, as well as a year-round home for great blue herons, great egrets, wood storks, cormorants, brown pelicans and other species of marsh and shore birds, as well as a variety of insects

This HiRISE image was taken to sample terrain north of Elysium Planitia and Athabasca Valles. Because HiRISE can only image a small fraction of Mars, most images are targeted on specially selected features of interest. However, we also sample other locations, both to understand the normal terrain and look for things that might not have been obvious enough in other data for anyone to mark out a target. This image caught something interesting. Most of the surface is smooth regolith peppered with small craters. However, some of the craters are notably dark compared with everything else in the image. Zooming in to full resolution shows the reason: the dark craters have small ripples and are dark blue in enhanced color, characteristics usually associated with active sand kicking off its dust cover. Why the sand is moving in these particular craters but not others is not certain but could relate to induration (hardening) of the sand, or the age or topography of the craters. https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA23427

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. — A young blue heron stretches its wings amid the branches of pepper trees in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which shares a boundary with NASA Kennedy Space Center. Its habitat ranges throughout the United States, near lakes, ponds, rivers and marshes. Most migrate south in the fall. This and other wildlife abound throughout KSC as it shares a boundary with the Wildlife Refuge, home to some of the nation’s rarest and most unusual species of wildlife. The wildlife refuge is a habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the Refuge supports 19 endangered or threatened wildlife species on Federal or State lists, more than any other single refuge in the U.S.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA officials detail progress toward a September 2014 flight test called Exploration Flight Test-1 or EFT-1 as part of the agency's goal of launching astronauts into deep space. Speaking inside the Young-Crippen Firing Room at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the officials discussed the goals and expectations for EFT-1 with news media.
