STS075-328-026 (25 Feb. 1996) --- Astronaut Claude Nicollier is the only clearly identifiable crewmember in this scene on the aft flight deck, captured during the busy chores associated with deployment of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS). The seven member crew was launched aboard the space shuttle Columbia on Feb. 22, 1996, and landed on March 9, 1996.  Crewmembers were Andrew M. Allen, mission commander; Scott J. Horowitz, pilot; Franklin R. Chang-Diaz, payload commander; and Maurizio Cheli, European Space Agency (ESA); Jeffrey A. Hoffman and Nicollier, ESA, all mission specialists; along with payload specialist Umberto Guidoni of the Italian Space Agency (ASI).

Thomas, mission specialist, interrupts a Spacehab task to pose for an Electronic Still Camera (ESC) snapshot inside the Spacehab Module onboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Endeavour.  In upper left is the view port which crew members had used for viewing and photographing operations with the Spartan 207/Inflatable Antenna Experiment (IAE).  Thomas has his hand on an aft-bulkhead-mounted locker.  The Space Experiment Facility (SEF), designed and managed by the University of Alabama, is just behind his left shoulder.

A pair of windows just out of frame above Runco's head provide the crew members with a prime operating perspective of Earth observation targets. STS059-16-032 (9-20 April 1994) --- Astronaut Kevin P. Chilton, pilot, displays a map of Scandinavia on the Space Shuttle Endeavour's flight deck.  Large scale maps such as this were used by the crew to locate specific sites of interest to the Space Radar Laboratory scientists.  The crew then photographed the sites at the same time as the radar in the payload bay imaged them.  Chilton was joined in space by five other NASA astronauts for a week and a half of support to the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL-1) mission and other tasks.

STS061-03-029 (2013 Dec 1993) --- Astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman displays tools used in the five space walks on the STS-61 Hubble Space Telescope (HST) repair mission.  Hoffman was one of four space walkers making use of the variegated gear.

STS061-53-001 (4 Dec 1993) --- Astronaut Richard O. Covey mans the commander's station on the Space Shuttle Endeavour during flight day 3 of the eleven-day mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).  Covey wears a Texas A & M University cap as a salute to members of the training staff who have A & M connections.  The crew was busy on this day preparing for the approach and grapple operations with the HST.

STS035-49-029 (2-10 Dec 1990) --- Posing on the middeck of Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102, are Mission Specialist (MS) Jeffrey A. Hoffman (mustache) and MS Robert A. R. Parker. Determining who is right side up is complicated by the microgravity of space. Hoffman's head is at the middeck floor and his feet are at the ceiling. The two crewmembers are in front of OV-102's port side with the waste collection system (WCS) contingency unit, side hatch, and galley visible behind them.

STS036-21-032 (3 March 1990) --- The five astronaut crewmembers for STS-36 pose for an inflight group portrait on the forward flight deck of Atlantis, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 104. They are (left to right) Commander John O. Creighton, Mission Specialist (MS) David C. Hilmers, MS Richard M. Mullane, MS Pierre J. Thuot, and Pilot John H. Casper. Creighton is positioned in the commanders seat and Casper in the pilot?s seat. Overhead control panels appear above the astronauts. The astronauts spent four days, 10 hours and 19 minutes aboard OV-104 for the Department of Defense (DOD) dedicated mission.

STS037-29-002 (5-11 April 1991) --- Astronauts Linda M. Godwin and Jerry L. Ross perform a balancing act on Atlantis' middeck. With little effort Godwin is able to hold Ross up near the ceiling with her index finger. Although the area the two occupy is very small, a number of articles are seen, including two sleep restraints, the escape pole and Bioserve ITA Materials Dispersion Apparatus bioprocessing test bed (attached to stowage lockers at left). This was one of the visuals used by the STS-37 crewmembers during their April 19 post-flight press conference at the Johnson Space Center (JSC).

STS066-66-005 (3-14 Nov 1994) --- On the Space Shuttle Atlantis' flight deck, Jean-François Clervoy, mission specialist representing the European Space Agency (ESA), moves a platform for the recumbent seat device which was being evaluated for a future Space Shuttle flight.  The platform is just part of the mid-deck arrangement designed to accommodate crew members when the Space Shuttle docks with Russia's Mir Space Station next year.  Other crew members onboard Atlantis for the 11-day day Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS-3) mission were astronauts Donald R. McMonagle, Curtis L. Brown, Jr., Ellen Ochoa, Scott E. Parazynski and Joseph R. Tanner.

STS061-73-040 (4 Dec 1993) --- Backdropped against the blackness of space, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) nears the Space Shuttle Endeavour.  With the aid of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), the STS-61 crew members later grappled the spacecraft and berthed it in the cargo bay for five-days of servicing chores by four space walkers.

STS037-54-004 (5-11 April 1991) --- Four crew members have fun with weightlessness on the Space Shuttle Atlantis' middeck.  Astronaut Kenneth D. Cameron, pilot, performs a "quick hands" feat with three tape cassettes -- obviously a feat much more difficult on Earth. Looking on, left to right, are astronauts Linda M. Godwin, mission specialist; Steven R. Nagel, mission commander; and Jerry L. Ross, mission specialist.  Ross later used the microgravity environment to have some fun with the bag of malted milk balls in his hands. This 35mm frame was exposed by astronaut Jerome (Jay) Apt, mission specialist.  This was one of the visuals used by the crew members during their April 19 Post Flight Press Conference (PFPC) at the Johnson Space Center (JSC).

STS007-02-020 (21 June 1983) --- Astronaut Sally K. Ride, STS-7 mission specialist, STS-7 mission specialist, stands in the mid deck of the orbiting Space Shuttle Challenger near one of the experiment with which she has devoted a great deal of time.  The continuous flow electrophoresis system (CFES) experiment, about the size of a household refrigerator, stands nearby.  One of her fellow crewmembers moves partially out of frame in the background.  The tube on her face is part of a communications system linking Dr. Ride to ground controllers in Houston.

STS075-333-032 (22 Feb.- 9 March 1996) --- Astronaut Scott J. Horowitz, pilot, looks over tools he may use to perform an Inflight Maintenance (IFM) chore on the mid deck of the Earth-orbiting space shuttle Columbia. The glovebox facility is at upper left. Horowitz joined four other astronauts and an international payload specialist for 16 days of scientific research in Earth-orbit.

STS061-53-010 (4 Dec 1993) --- Astronaut Kenneth D. Bowersox mans the pilot's station on the Space Shuttle Endeavour during the eleven-day mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).  Bowersox was one of three crew members who remained in the crew cabin while astronauts conducted a total of five space walks to perform various tasks on the HST.

STS059-44-004 (9-20 April 1994) --- This middeck scene aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour caught all six STS-59 crew members in a rare group shot.  Astronaut Sidney M. Gutierrez, mission commander (front center) is flanked by astronauts Jerome (Jay) Apt and Thomas D. Jones, both mission specialists.  On the back row are (left to right) astronaut Kevin P. Chilton, pilot; Linda M. Godwin, payload commander; and Michael R. (Rich) Clifford, mission specialist.  Most of the week and a half was divided into two work shifts for the crew members.

STS059-228-094 (9-20 April 1994) --- The spring thaw along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska has not touched the St. Elias Mountains, southeast of Yakutat Bay and Malaspina Glacier.  A prominent glacier flows from Mt. Fairweather (15,300 feet) at right center, to form Cape Fairweather.  Another glacier to the northwest almost reaches the sea; the valley of the Alsek River forms a broad, braided plan at upper left.  The low sun elevation and oblique angle of this photograph provide a striking 3-dimensional appearance to the black-and-white landscape.  SRL investigators will study microwave response to varying depths and conditions of ice and snow along this coast, in Spring and Summer.  Hasselblad photograph.

STS059-09-012 (9-20 April 1994) --- On the Space Shuttle Endeavour's aft flight deck, astronaut Michael R. (Rich) Clifford, mission specialist, inserts a tape in the payload high rate recorder.  Three of these state-of-the-art recorders captured four times the amount of data that could be radioed to the ground.  The 183 tapes, each containing 40 megabytes of data, will be turned into images over the next year, and analyzed over the next decade.  Clifford was joined in space by five other NASA astronauts for a week and a half of support to the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL-1)/STS-59 mission.

41G-07-021 (5-13 October 1984) --- Astronauts Kathryn D. Sullivan, left, and Sally K. Ride show off what appears to be a "bag of worms", a product of their creativity. The "bag" is a sleep restraint and the majority of the "worms" are springs and clips used with the sleep restraint in its normal application. Clamps, a bungee cord and Velcro strips are other recognizable items in the "creation".

STS062-17-034 (4-18 March 1994) --- This scene, resembling a photographer's studio/laboratory, actually shows the aft flight deck of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. A variety of cameras, lenses, visual aids and other gear are seen stowed around the flight deck. The five astronaut crew members devoted a large portion of their on-duty time at this workstation using some of this photographic equipment to record Earth imagery.

STS-65 Mission Specialist Carl E. Walz floats above center aisle equipment in the International Microgravity Laboratory 2 (IML-2) spacelab science module. Walz has just entered the IML-2 module via the spacelab tunnel (note hatch opening behind him). The tunnel connects the IML-2 module with Columbia's, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102's, crew compartment. Walz along with five other NASA astronauts and a Japanese payload specialist spent more than two weeks in Earth orbit conducting IML-2 experiments. This photo was among the first released by NASA following IML-2.

Meade checks a hose associated with the new Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system prior to a Extravehicular Activity (EVA) that tested SAFER. On the Sept. 16, 1994 EVA, astronauts Meade and Mark C. Lee took turns using the SAFER hardware. The test of SAFER is the first phase of a larger SAFER program whose objectives are to establish a common set of requirements for both space shuttle and space station program needs, develop a flight demonstration of SAFER, validate system performance and, finally, develop a production version of SAFER for the shuttle and station programs. 51A-104-008 (14 Nov 1984) --- Astronaut Dale A. Gardner appears to be under the remote manipulator system (RMS) end effector as he makes a turn in space and prepared to traverse, using the manned maneuvering unit (MMU) backpack, to the nearby Westar VI to "Sting" it with the device he carries.  The stringer will enter the communications satellite through the nozzle of the spent motor.  Gardner achieved a hard dock at 6:32 A.M. and this picture was photographed about five minutes earlier, on Nov. 14, 1984.

Leestma, both 41-G mission specialists, perform an in-space simulation of refueling another spacecraft in orbit.  Their station on the space shuttle Challenger is the orbital refueling system (ORS), positioned on the mission peculiar support structure (MPR  ESS).  The Large Format Camera (LFC) is left of the two mission specialists.  In the left foreground is the antenna for the shuttle imaging radar (SIR-B) system onboard. 51D-04-025 (16 April 1985) --- Bearing a maze of interesting reflections, this aquarium-like scene came during one of the lighter moments of emergency extravehicular activity (EVA) aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Discovery.  Astronaut S. David Griggs, waving from the cargo bay into the flight deck, earlier participated with astronaut Jeffrey A. Hoffman in the successful attachment of two special tools to the end of the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm.  The Earth's horizon appears both in the background of the scene and in the reflection in Griggs' helmet visor.

STS066-22-012 (3-14 Nov 1994) --- On the Space Shuttle Atlantis' mid-deck, astronaut Donald R. McMonagle, mission commander, works with the Heat Pipe Performance (HPP-2) experiment.  HPP-2 was flown to investigate the thermal performance and fluid dynamics of heat pipes operating with asymmetric and multiple heating zones under microgravity conditions.  McMonagle was joined by four other NASA astronauts and a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut for 11-days aboard Atlantis in Earth-orbit in support of the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS-3) mission.

STS056-31-020 (8-17 April 1993) --- The five astronaut crew members assemble on the Space Shuttle Discovery's aft flight deck for the traditional inflight crew portrait.  In front are astronauts Kenneth D. Cameron, mission commander; and C. Michael Foale, mission specialist.  In back are (left to right) astronauts Ellen Ochoa, mission specialist; Stephen S. Oswald, pilot; and Kenneth D. Cockrell, mission specialist.  The five went on to spend nine days in Earth-orbit in support of the Atlas-2 mission.  A 35mm camera with a 20mm lens was used to expose this frame.

STS058-88-017 (18 Oct-1 Nov 1993) --- The eye-catching "bullseye" of the Richat Structure adds interest to the barren Gres de Chinguetti Plateau in central Mauretania, northwest Africa.  It represents domally uplifted, layered (sedimentary) rocks that have been eroded by water and wind into the present shape.  Desert sands have invaded the feature from the south.  The origin of the structure is unknown.  It is not an impact structure, because field work showed that strata are undisturbed and flat-lying in the middle of the feature, and no shock-altered rock could be found.  There is no evidence for a salt dome or shale diapir, nor is there any geophysical evidence for an underlying dome of dense igneous rock having about the same density as the sedimentary layers.

STS064-116-064 (20 Sept. 1994) --- Near the end of the mission, the crew aboard space shuttle Discovery was able to document the beginning of the second day of activity of the Rabaul volcano, on the east end of New Britain. On the morning of Sept. 19, 1994, two volcanic cones on the opposite sides of the 6-kilometer sea crater had begun to erupt with very little warning. Discovery flew just east of the eruption roughly 24 hours after it started and near the peak of its activity.  New Ireland, the cloud-covered area in the foreground, lies just east of Rabaul harbor. The eruption, which sent a plume up to over 60,000 feet into the atmosphere, caused over 50,000 people to evacuate the area. Because winds were light at the time of the eruption, most of the ash was deposited in a region within 20 kilometers of the eruption zone. This photo shows the large white billowing eruption plume is carried in a westerly direction by the weak prevailing winds. At the base of the eruption column is a layer of yellow-brown ash being distributed by lower level winds. A sharp boundary moving outward from the center of the eruption in the lower cloud is a pulse of laterally-moving ash which results from a volcanic explosion. Geologists theorize that the large white column and the lower gray cloud are likely from the two main vents on each side of the harbor. The bay and harbor of Rabaul are covered with a layer of ash, possibly partly infilled with volcanic material. Matupit Island and the airport runway have disappeared into the bay. More than a meter of ash has fallen upon the city of Rabaul. Up to five vents were reported to have erupted at once, including the two cones Vulcan and Tavurvur, which are opposites of the harbor as well as new vents below the bay. Half of the Vulcan cone has collapsed into the sea. The extra day in space due to bad weather at the landing site afforded the crew the opportunity for both still and video coverage of the event. STS040-211-019 (5-14 June 1991) --- Astride the bicycle ergometer, astronaut Rhea Seddon, mission specialist, breathes into the cardiovascular re-breathing unit during the exercise phase of an experiment. The investigation, In-flight Study of Cardiovascular Deconditioning (Experiment 066), was developed by Dr. Leon E. Farhi of the State University of New York in Buffalo. It focuses on the deconditioning of the heart and lungs and changes in cardiopulmonary function that occur upon return to Earth. By using non-invasive techniques of prolonged expiration and re-breathing, investigators can determine the amount of blood pumped out of the heart (cardiac output), the ease with which blood flows through all the vessels (total peripheral resistance), oxygen used and carbon dioxide released by the body, and lung function and volume changes. Measurements are made both while crew members are resting and while they pedal the exercise bicycle, as Dr. Seddon is doing here. This scene was photographed with a 35mm camera.

STS062-04-005 (4-18 March 1994) --- Astronaut Marsha S. Ivins has her hands full with a thermal imaging project on the flight deck of the Space Shuttle Columbia as astronaut Pierre J. Thuot stands by to help.  The two mission specialists were joined by three other veteran NASA astronauts for almost 14 full days in Earth-orbit.

STS058-72-004 (18 Oct-1 Nov 1993) --- The Sierra Nevada Mountain Range can be seen in this north-looking high oblique view taken in October, 1993, by the STS-58 crew.  Visible in the view to the west of the Sierra Nevada are the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys of central California.  The San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area can be seen to the west of the valley at the extreme left of the photograph.  To the east or right of the Sierra Nevada, the basin and Range Region of central and northern Nevada is visible.  Mono Lake, Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake are also visible in this scene.  The long northwest/southeast trending Walker Lane Shear Zone, which lies just to the east (right) of the Sierra Nevada is also visible.  Near the top of the view (near the horizon), the snow covered volcanic peak Mount Shasta can be seen.  Over 645 kilometers (400 miles) long and from 65 to 130 kilometers (40 to 80 miles) wide, the Sierra Nevada have many peaks in excess of 3,300 meters (11,000 feet) above sea level.  A titled fault block in structure (the largest in the United States) and shaped by glaciers during the last ice age over 12,000 years ago, the Sierra Nevada eastern front rises sharply from the Great Basin of Nevada, while its western slope descends gradually to the hills bordering the Central Valley of California.  Snow-fed streams supply much of the irrigation water to the Central Valley and to western Nevada and also generate hydroelectricity.  Recent above normal precipitation (snowfall) of the last two years has helped in alleviating the drought conditions that had prevailed throughout most of California in the mid and late 1980's and early 1990's.

STS059-L22-140 (9-20 April 1994) --- View northeastward across Uzbekastan to the partly-ice-covered Aral Sea and Kazakhstan.  The irrigated fan-delta of the Amu Darya extends from the right side of the photograph to end in extensive salt flats at the south end of the sea.  The Aral was the fourth-largest inland sea or lake in the world, until diversion and over-use of the river water for irrigation led, in this arid climate, to the sea's decline.  Linhof camera.

STS059-L09-162 (9-20 April 1994) --- Orient with the snow-covered mountains (Sierra Nevada of California) in the upper right corner.  Then Owens Valley runs along the top of the photograph to Owens Lake playa at top center.  The upper end of Death Valley extends from right to left in the foreground, with the drainage running down to a playa at Stovepipe Wells in the left foreground.  Geologists are studying microwave signatures of the different playa surfaces, and the coatings on alluvial fans that extend from mountain masses, to try to sort out the history of different climates in this formerly wet but now hyperarid region.

He is monitoring data associated with the Space Station Heat Pipe Advanced Radiator Element II (SHARE-II) located in OV-104's payload bay (PLB) from his position in front of the aft flight deck viewing windows. Behind Baker are the closed circuit television (CCTV) monitors and above his head is overhead window W8.

STS030-10-008    (4-8 May 1989) --- Since the beginning manned space travel, astronauts have taken with them items of personal sentiment.  In case of Mark C. Lee, STS-30 mission specialist, a picture of a cow testifies to his background as one reared on a Wisconsin farm.  The scene, through a flight deck aft window,  also shows Earth some 160 nautical miles away.
