Skylab 2 crewmen give demonstration on effects of weightlessness
Millions of people on Earth watched via television as a message for all mankind was delivered to the Mare Tranquilitatis (Sea of Tranquility) region of the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission, where it still remains today. This photograph is a reproduction of the commemorative plaque that was attached to the leg of the Lunar Module (LM), Eagle, engraved with the following words: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July, 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all of mankind.” It bears the signatures of the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module (CM) pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., Lunar Module (LM) pilot along with the signature of the U.S. President Richard M. Nixon.  The Apollo 11 mission launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida via the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developed Saturn V launch vehicle on July 16, 1969 and safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. The CM, “Columbia”, piloted by Collins, remained in a parking orbit around the Moon while the LM, “Eagle’’, carrying astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin, landed on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong was the first human to ever stand on the lunar surface, followed by Aldrin. During 2½ hours of surface exploration, the crew collected 47 pounds of lunar surface material for analysis back on Earth. With the success of Apollo 11, the national objective to land men on the Moon and return them safely to Earth had been accomplished.

Scientist-astronaut Joseph P. Kerwin, Skylab 2 science pilot, assists Conrad into the LBNP device. Kerwin served as monitor for the experiment. The purpose of the MO92 experiment is to provide information concerning the time course of cardiovascular adaptation during flight, and to provide inflight data for predicting the degree of orthostatic intolerance and impairment of physical capacity to be expected upon return to Earth environment. S73-26738 (25 May 1973) --- A close-up view of the Skylab 1 space station cluster can be seen in this reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by a TV camera aboard the Skylab 2 Command Module during its ?fly-around? inspection of the cluster.  The numbers across the top of the picture indicate the Skylab 1 ground lapse time. Note the missing portion of the micrometeoroid shield on the Orbital Workshop. The shield area was reported to be solid gold by the Skylab 2 crewmen. A cable appears to be wrapped around the damaged OWS solar array system wing. The crewmen reported that the other OWS solar panel was completely gone, with only tubes and wiring sticking out. One of the discone antennas extends out form the Airlock Module. The Multiple Docking Adapter is in the lower left corner of the picture. A portion of a solar panel on the Apollo Telescope Mount is visible at the bottom and at the left edge. STS047-02-018 (12 - 20 Sept 1992) --- Astronauts N. Jan Davis, mission specialist, and Curtis L. Brown, Jr., pilot, oversee the progress of some of the 180 female Oriental Hornets onboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.  The insects are part of the Israeli Space Agency Investigation About Hornets (ISAIAH) experiment.  The objective of this experiment is to examine the effects of microgravity on the orientation, reproductive capability and social activity of the hornets.  Also, the direction of comb-building by hornet workers in microgravity, as well as the structural integrity of the combs, will be examined.

STS085-502-104 (7 - 19 August 1997) --- The abundant plankton, microscopic organisms, are taking the shape of the currents in the Baltic Sea offshore from Gdansk, Poland.  Plankton blooms occur when there is enough nutrient in the water to support rapid growth and reproduction of the microorganisms.  Gdansk is situated at the mouth of the Vistula River on the north coast of Poland.  It is a major industrial center for shipyards, metallurgical and chemical plants, timber mills, food-processing facilities and more recently (since 1975) for coal exports and petroleum imports.

Range :  900,000 miles  A brilliant halo around Jupiter, the thin ring of particles discovered by Voyager 1 four months ago, is seen here unusually bright due to forward scattering of the particles within it. Similiarly, the planet is outlined by sunlight scattered toward the spacecraft from a haze layer high in jupiter's atmosphere. The arms of the ring are cut off on each sideby the planet's shadow as they approach the brightly outlined disk. The night side of the planet appears completly dark in this reproduction, but later will be specially reprocessed to search for evidence of lightning sorms and auroras. This 4 image mosaic was obtained  with Voyager 2's wide angle camera.

STS047-35-022 (12 - 20 Sept 1992) --- Astronauts Curtis L. Brown, Jr., pilot, and N. Jan Davis, mission specialist, team up to cure a high humidity problem in the hornet experiment in the Spacelab-J Science Module of the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Endeavour.  Via a jury-rigged hose hook-up, the two were able to blow air from a spacesuit fan into the experiment, thus eliminating condensation that obscured the viewing of the Israeli hornet experiment.  The experiment examined the effects of microgravity on the orientation, reproductive capability and social activity of 180 female Oriental Hornets.

S69-33996 (18 May 1969) --- A cloud-covered Pacific Ocean, and the western part of the United States and Mexico, from about 12,800 nautical miles away are seen in this color reproduction taken from the second TV transmission made by the color television camera aboard the Apollo 10 spacecraft. The camera's zoom lens was used to get this view. The Pacific Ocean covers four-fifths of the picture. On the right is the land mass of North America. This view of the western coast extends from the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico, northward to British Columbia. Mexico, California, Nevada, and Arizona have few clouds; but Washington and Oregon are heavily cloud-covered.
EARTH VIEWS - APOLLO X
The first manned lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, launched from the Kennedy Space Flight Center (KSC) in Florida via the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developed Saturn V launch vehicle on July 16, 1969 and safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. Astronauts onboard included Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module (CM) pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., Lunar Module (LM) pilot. The CM, “Columbia”, piloted by Collins, remained in a parking orbit around the Moon while the LM, “Eagle’’, carrying astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin, landed on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong was the first human to ever stand on the lunar surface, followed by Aldrin. This is a reproduction of the television image that was transmitted to the world on July 20th, as Armstrong egressed the ladder to the lunar surface. The black bar running through the center of the photograph is an anomaly in the TV Ground Data System at Goldstone Tracking Station.
Saturn Apollo Program
S71-56246 (November 1971) --- The Apollo 16 crew patch is dominated by an eagle perched atop a red, white and blue shield a superimposed on a lunar scene, surrounded by a blue circle of 16 stars with the crew's surnames completing the bottom are of the circle. Across the face of the shield is a gold symbol of flight outlined in blue, similar to that on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) agency seal and insignia. The design was created by a NASA artist from ideas submitted by the three crew men: astronauts John W. Young, commander; Thomas K. Mattingly II, command module pilot; and Charles M. Duke Jr., lunar module pilot. This is the official Apollo 16 emblem, a property of the government of the United States. It has been authorized only for use by the astronauts. Its reproduction in any form other than in news, information and education media is not authorized without approval. Unauthorized use is subject to the provisions of Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 701.

The two spiders are housed in an enclosure onto which a motion picture and still camera are attached to record the spider’s attempt to build a web in the zero-gravity of space. Schmitt pay their respects and send their best wishes to the members of the International Youth Science Tour, who were visiting the Manned Spacecraft Center, in brief ceremonies near the close of the third Apollo 17 extravehicular activity (EVA) at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. This picture is a reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by the color RCA TV camera mounted on the lunar roving vehicle. Noting that they had collected a very significant rock composed of many fragments, Schmitt said, "A portion of a rock will be sent to a representative agency or museum in each of the countries represented by the young people in Houston today..." The more than 70 foreign students were in the U.S. visiting space research and science centers. In his closing remarks to the students Cernan remarked, "We salute you, promise of the future."
APOLLO XVII - INFLIGHT
S72-35901 (25 April 1972) --- Astronaut Thomas K. (Ken) Mattingly II, command module pilot of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, floats in space outside the spacecraft during his trans-Earth extravehicular activity (EVA), as seen in this reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by a color TV camera mounted on the Command Module (CM) hatch. Mattingly used hand-holds and a foot restraint to hold himself in position, and he was secured to the spacecraft by an umbilical tether line. During his EVA, Mattingly made an inspection of the Service Module's (SM) Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) bay, and retrieved film cassettes from the Panoramic Camera and the Mapping Camera. The trans-Earth EVA occurred at ground elapsed time of 242:55, and 2:49 p.m. (CST), Tuesday, April 25, 1972.

INFLIGHT - APOLLO XVI (LUNAR MODULE [LM] LAUNCH)
S69-39532 (18 July 1969) --- The face of astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot of Apollo 11 lunar landing mission, is seen in this color reproduction, taken from the third television transmission, from the Apollo 11 spacecraft during its trans-lunar journey toward the moon. Aldrin is inside the Lunar Module (LM). In the background are some the LM's controls and displays. A LM window is on the right. The LM was still docked nose to nose with the Command and Service Modules (CSM). Apollo 11 was approximately 176,000 nautical miles from Earth, and traveling at a speed of about 3,200 feet per second when this photograph was taken. Also, in the LM with Aldrin was astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Apollo 11 commander. Astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained in the Command Module (CM).

S71-43788 (2 Aug. 1971) --- Astronaut David R. Scott, Apollo 15 commander, watches a geological hammer and a feather hit the lunar surface simultaneously in a test of Galileo's law of motion concerning falling bodies, as seen in this color reproduction taken from a transmission made by the RCA color television camera mounted on the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). Scott released the hammer from his right hand and the feather from his left at the same instant. Galileo (1564-1642) was the great Italian astronomer and physicist. This experiment occurred toward the end of the third and final lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA) by astronauts Scott and James B. Irwin, lunar module pilot. While Scott and Irwin descended in the Lunar Module (LM) to explore the moon, astronaut Alfred M. Worden, command module pilot, remained in the Command and Service Modules (CSM) in lunar orbit.

Scott, Apollo 15 commander, performs the act of cancelling the first Apollo 15 commemorative postage stamp on the moon, as seen in this color reproduction taken from a transmission made by the RCA color television camera mounted on the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Scott holds a stamp cancellation device in his right hand. The new commemorative postage stamp heralds: "United States in Space -- A Decade of Achievement." The U.S. Postal Service chose artist Robert McCall of Paradise Valley, Arizona, to design the new U.S. eight-cent stamp. The stamp cancellation occurred toward the end of the third and final lunar surface extravehicular activity by astronauts Scott and James B. Irwin, lunar module pilot.

S72-35900 (25 April 1972) --- Astronaut Thomas K. (Ken) Mattingly II, command module pilot of the Apollo 16 lunar landing mission, floats in space outside the spacecraft during his trans-Earth extravehicular activity (EVA), as seen in this reproduction taken from a color television transmission made by a color TV camera mounted on the Command Module (CM) hatch. Mattingly used hand-holds and a foot restraint to hold himself in position, and he was secured to the spacecraft by an umbilical tether line. During his EVA, Mattingly made an inspection of the Service Module's (SM) Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) bay, and retrieved film cassettes from the Panoramic Camera and the Mapping Camera. The trans-Earth EVA occurred at ground elapsed time of 242:55, and 2:49 p.m. (CST), Tuesday, April 25, 1972.

The Apollo 16 crew patch is dominated by an eagle perched atop a red, white, and blue shield superimposed on a lunar surface scene. Similar to that on the NASA agency shield and insignia, there is a gold symbol of flight outlined in blue across the face of the shield. The border surrounding the shield is a circle of 16 stars completed by the the crew’s surnames at the bottom. The patch was designed from ideas submitted by the Apollo 16 3-man crew: John W. Young, Mission Commander: Thomas K. Mattingly, Command Module pilot; and Charles M. Duke, Lunar Module pilot. (Note: This is the official Apollo 16 emblem, a property of the United States government. Apollo XVI TV TRANSMISSION - POOR QUALITY
Ribbons is a program developed at UAB used worldwide to graphically depict complicated protein structures in a simplified format. The program uses sophisticated computer systems to understand the implications of protein structures. The Influenza virus remains a major causative agent for a large number of deaths among the elderly and young children and huge economic losses due to illness. Finding a cure will have a general impact both on the basic research of viral pathologists of fast evolving infectious agents and clinical treatment of influenza virus infection. The reproduction process of all strains of influenza are dependent on the same enzyme neuraminidase. Shown here is a segmented representation of the neuraminidase inhibitor compound sitting inside a cave-like contour of the neuraminidase enzyme surface. This cave-like formation present in every neuraminidase enzyme is the active site crucial to the flu's ability to infect. The space-grown crystals of neuraminidase have provided significant new details about the three-dimensional characteristics of this active site thus allowing researchers to design drugs that fit tighter into the site. S73-34206 (8 Aug. 1973) --- A closeup view of Arabella, one of two Skylab 3 common cross spiders ?Araneus diadematus,? and the web it had spun in the zero-gravity of space aboard the Skylab space station cluster in Earth orbit. This is a photographic reproduction made a color television transmission aboard Skylab. During the 59-day Skylab 3 mission the two spiders, Arabella and Anita, were housed in an enclosure onto which a motion picture camera and a still camera were attached to record the spiders? attempts to build a web in the weightless environment. The spider experiment (ED52) was one of 25 experiments selected for Skylab by NASA from more than 3,400 experiment proposals submitted by 17-year-old Judith S. Miles of Lexington, Massachusetts.
